Later this year, Battlefield 2042 will bring unprecedented scale to returning Battlefield game modes Conquest and Breakthrough, but will also attempt to deliver some variety with two other, unrevealed modes. One of those modes already has a name, Hazard Mode, and is allegedly going to be very similar to Escape from Tarkov. As an additional mode, this sounds much more interesting and fitting than Battlefield V's failed Firestorm battle royale.
Firestorm launched quite some time after Battlefield V proper, and was generally unpolished, especially compared to Apex Legends, which had released not even two months earlier. Although Battlefield V had its own problems, Firestorm was especially short-lived. Battlefield developer DICE seems to have learned from this misstep (though Firestorm was developed by Criterion), and are looking for other inspirations for alternate game modes in 2042, specifically Escape from Tarkov.
Leaked information comes from Tom Henderson via Youtube, alleging Hazard Zone is potentially a free-to-play offering for Battlefield 2042. Though specific details are scarce, simply saying it emulates Escape from Tarkov provides an idea of how the game mode will play out. Put very simply, Tarkov has players enter a match, scavenge for loot, and attempt to extract without being killed. Dying in a game forfeits all loot the player had at the time of death unless it's recovered by a teammate, making it fit the "high-stakes, squad-based" description of Hazard Zone given by EA.
Hazard Zone has the potential to take Battlefield's gameplay in a new, more tactical direction. As recent, Battlefield-indulgent trailers for 2042 have shown, the series' gameplay is largely unorganized chaos. Objectives provide some direction, but each match is more or less random firefights popping up until one side is forced to spawn further away. A game mode similar to Escape from Tarkov can give players the opportunity to jump into a more intense situation where teamwork is absolutely vital.
Firestorm had its moments, but its inclusion in a World War II setting was always a bit confusing. Hazard Zone fits surprisingly well into the fictional, near future DICE created for Battlefield 2042. The Non-Patriated Specialists players control in-game are perfectly suited for a game mode where players have to find an objective, collect more loot for later, and extract. Not that it's of utmost importance, but the added immersion of N0-Pats having to find their own gear provides some believability to the game mode. The potential of Hazard Zone will have to be more thoroughly assessed when more details are officially unveiled, but the rumors circulating about Battlefield 2042's new mode are at least promising.
