Captain America: Marvel Comics Introduces New Filipino Shield-Bearer

Marvel Comics is introducing a new Filipino-American hero who will become a new shield-bearer after being inspired by Captain America. Ari Agbayani will be introduced in an upcoming issue of The United States of Captain America. Agbayani will not be inspired by Steve Rogers' Captain America, however, but by Bucky Barnes' version of the character - which her vigilante attitude and costume are influenced by.

The United States of Captain America is an ambitious upcoming series by Christopher Cantwell and Dale Eaglesham that will take the different versions of Captain America across the country in order to track down Steve's stolen shield. Making the journey with him (and showing up in the series) are other heroes who donned the Captain America mantle, including John Walker, Bucky Barners, and Sam Wilson. Each issue of the series will feature a backup story introducing "captains" who are local Captain America's of their respective communities who were inspired by the shield-bearing heroes. Marvel Comics has already revealed the first gay shield-bearer in Aaron Fischer, a new Black female Cap named Nichelle Wright, and an indigenous Captain America, Joe Gomez.

The United States of Captain America #4 will introduce Ari Agbayani, a Filipino-American student on scholarship at a university where she finds out her best friend is being terrorized by a wealthy student with family ties to the school. Agbayani, created by Alyssa Wong and Jodi Nishijima, will fight against the situation as a shield-bearing vigilante. She will have an uphill battle, as a number of buildings at the school are named after the wealthy student's family and the university is perfectly fine turning a blind eye as long as their pockets remain full. Agbayani will "get creative" and fight dirty to ensure she finds justice for her friend. Check out the designs for the character below.

The United States of Captain America #4 will also feature a Stormbreaker variant of Agbayani by Peach Momoko.

In the main story, Captain America will be taking on one of his new villains. Gerald Parel's cover for the issue features a mysterious new character, as well as Steve Rogers and John Walker seemingly squaring off.

The idea of creating different Captain America's and shield-bearers for different communities is a great way to introduce new heroes and show the influence a person wielding the shield can have in the Marvel Universe. In Ari Agbayani's case, she was inspired by Bucky Barnes - which her awesome outfit clearly shows. The new hero will get into action when The United States of Captain America #4 comes to stores on September 22nd, 2021.
