However, the game is not only referenced, but the various games themselves are also chock-full of easter eggs and references. There are a variety of callbacks to the previous games, as well as others, and contains a considerable amount of references to movies, both subtle and overt. Here, we countdown just ten of the many.

10 OFFICE SPACE (1999) - MORTAL KOMBAT 11 (2019)

Two of the downloadable playable characters in Mortal Kombat 11 are two comic-book characters in Spawn and Joker. In what is a reference only for those who have seen the movie, Joker references Office Space when the two come face-to-face in a battle.

Joker tells Spawn, "Sounds like you've got a case of the grumps," which is remarkably similar to a famous line from Office Space "sounds like somebody's got a case of the Mondays." Both Joker and the temp in the movie accentuate "grumps" and "Mondays" in the same way.

9 LETHAL WEAPON (1987) - MORTAL KOMBAT X (2015)

As the franchise gets on, Mortal Kombat games seen to be more and more full of references. Mortal Kombat X had its fair share, and one such reference came from Jax and related to the classic action flick Lethal Weapon.

As one of his character intro, Jax says, "I'm getting too old for this s***." This is, of course, a reference to a widely referenced line, and the most famous line of Lethal Weapon uttered by Murtaugh, that he speaks many times.

8 ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER'S FILMOGRAPHY - MORTAL KOMBAT 11 (2019)

The Terminator is another of the downloadable characters in Mortal Kombat 11. While he is not voiced by Schwarzenegger (played by Chris Cox instead) in the game, there is a load of references to his filmography.

There are True Lies when Terminator calls Jade the codename Doris, Jingle All The Way when Kabal says "it's turbo time" to Terminator, Terminator Genisys when Terminator suggests starting Operation Genisys in a mirror match, Kindergarten Cop with Terminator saying "it's not a tumor," with a couple of others sprinkled in too.

7 TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES (1990) - MORTAL KOMBAT DECEPTION (2004)

Sub-Zero is one of the most iconic characters in the entire Mortal Kombat franchise, and his rivalry with Scorpion is legendary, transcending the series and being as well-known as any in the gaming world.

His outfits are always cool, and in Mortal Kombat: Deception, there was one that looked familiar. His headgear seems identical to that of the famous Shredder from the 1990 cinematic version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

6 FORREST GUMP (1994) - MORTAL KOMBAT 11 (2019)

Mirror matches always produce some fascinating dialogue in Mortal Kombat 11, and references to other events and properties. One of the very best comes from the Kabal vs. Kabal mirror match.

The dialogue goes, "Mama always said life was like an armed robbery. Never know who you're gonna kill. Run Kabal Run!" This dialogue is remarkably similar to the iconic quotes of Forrest Gump, from Forrest Gump.

5 THE FILMOGRAPHY OF JOHNNY CAGE - VARIOUS (1992-)

Johnny Cage is another of the standout characters of the series. He has an arrogant, movie-star persona upon his introduction, and it helped him become a unique and funny presence in the game.

Back on Earth Realm, Cage is a movie star and has a filmography that contains multiple references to real-life movies. There is Citizen Cage (a play on Citizen Kane), Tommy Scissorhands (a play on Edward Scissorhands), Worlds Most Wanted (a play on Wanted), and Breaknose Mountain (a play on Brokeback Mountain.)

4 GONE WITH THE WIND (1939) (& VARIOUS OTHERS) - MORTAL KOMBAT (1992-)

In Mortal Kombat 11, when the two of them face-off, Johnny Cage says to Skarlet, "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn." This line, of course, lives engrained in pop culture by way of being the most iconic quote of Gone With The Wind.

Johnny Cage, of course, is famous for quotes pulled from various films. He says to D'vorah "In all the gin joints and all the towns," from Casablanca (1942). He also says to Cassie, "I can do anything better than you," from Annie Get Your Gun (1950). Other things Cage says on various occasions are "it's showtime," from Beetlejuice, "It's game over, man," from Aliens, with a plethora of others.

3 THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK (1980) - MORTAL KOMBAT X (2015)

Star Wars is one of the biggest pop culture phenomenons in the world and is a global smash hit with a series of movies, TV shows, books, video games, and comics. It is continuously referenced in pop culture, and it is no surprise that this includes Mortal Kombat.

In the intro conversation between Reptile and Bo Rai Cho, they imitate a famous discussion between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda, with both ending in "no, there is another."

2 FRANKENSTEIN (1931) - MORTAL KOMBAT (2011)

Frankenstein is one of the greatest classic horror stories of all time and helped pave the way for horror cinema. Often it is misunderstood that Frankenstein is the iconic monster, that, of course, is wrong as Frankenstein is the scientist, the monster is Frankenstein's monster.

This gets referenced in Mortal Kombat in the towers. Towers have been a massive part of Mortal Kombat for years and will be for years to come. One of the tower challenges in the game has the name Frankenstein's monster.

1 MORTAL KOMBAT (1995) - MORTAL KOMBAT X (2015)

The Mortal Kombat movie from 1995 has morphed into a kind of cult classic, but certainly is not the adaptation of the video game that it could have been. Nonetheless, there have been various references to it within the games of the franchise.

The best perhaps comes in Mortal Kombat X. In an intro face-off between Goro and Johnny Cage, Cage asks Goro, "don't you owe me some sunglasses?" This, of course, references the 1995 movie, where Goro smashes the glasses of Cage in their meeting.
