When it comes to villains, Lord Voldemort is up there right with the very best (or worst, depending on how you look at it). The Dark Lord is one of the coldest, most-evil individuals to ever exist within pop culture and, throughout the eight Harry Potter movies and seven books, shown himself to have no limits when it comes to inflicting pain and suffering on others.
He was particularly brutal to those who disobeyed him, usually punishing them in vile and hideous ways. We now take a look at 10 times he brutally penalized somebody for failing to do his bidding…
10 Lily Potter
Lily Potter does what all mothers would do by protecting her son Harry, even with Voldemort offering her the chance to escape. The Dark Lord informs her that, if she stands aside, she will be able to keep her life. But, rather than let the villain get to her only child, Lily stands up for herself instead.
She’s punished for this, with Voldemort calmly slaughtering her. However, her sacrifice means that Harry is able to survive the villain’s attempt on his life and also protects him in the Sorcerer’s Stone, when Quirinus Quirrell is unable to touch the boy without experiencing absolute agony. And speaking of Quirrell…
9 Quirinus Quirrell
Quirrell meets Harry when he’s shopping for Hogwarts supplies in Diagon Alley, not too soon after the youngster found out the truth about his powers. Little does the Boy Who Lived know, however, that later that very afternoon his Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher would break into Gringotts bank in order to procure the Sorcerer’s Stone.
Quirrell is unable to, however, with Voldemort then invading his head - literally. The Dark Lord decides to keep a ‘much closer eye’ on his servant and leaves him for dead when Harry is able to defeat him at the end of the first book and movie, preventing him from taking the stone in the process. The Hogwarts professor is left for dead, too, with Voldemort leaving his crippled body behind.
8 Avery
Avery is a Death Eater, one who gives Voldemort information from inside the Ministry of Magic. He informs the Dark Lord that anybody is able to take a prophecy from the Department of Mysteries but it emerges that this isn’t the case, with only those who they refer to able to take them off the shelf.
His punishment? A good dose of the Cruciatus Curse, one that leaves him screaming in agony. He’s also tortured when he first returns to his master’s side, having spent the years without Voldemort pretending that he was forced into working for the villain because of the Imperius Curse.
7 Igor Karkaroff
Igor Karkaroff is the headmaster of Durmstrang but, before working at the school, he was actually a Death Eater. However, having renounced the old ways and put many of his old friends inside Azkaban, he flees his post and goes on the run when Voldemort rises again in the Goblet of Fire.
The Dark Lord wants loyalty - and those who don’t obey usually face death. Karkaroff’s body is found in the Shrieking Shack just over a year after he’d fled, suggesting Voldemort ordered his death after finding out about his huge betrayal. This isn’t mentioned in the movies - but is in the books.
6 Lucius Malfoy
Lucius Malfoy prides himself on being one of Voldemort’s biggest supporters but, despite that, is still punished for disobeying the Dark Lord.
After failing to get the prophecy from the Department of Mysteries, the Dark Lord retaliates by instead giving Draco Malfoy one of the hardest tasks imaginable: murdering Albus Dumbledore. Draco is meant to die via the effort but he succeeds for the most part, with Snape murdering Dumbledore instead. Lucius is also punished when he has to give his wand to Voldemort in the Deathly Hallows: Part 1.
5 Bellatrix Lestrange
Another person who admires Voldemort is Bellatrix Lestrange, with the deranged Death Eater often doing everything possible in order to please her master. However, like Lucius, she isn’t spared punishment. And Bellatrix is banned from leaving Malfoy Manor after allowing Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger to escape the premises following their showdown at the end of Deathly Hallows: Part 1.
We find this out when Hermione poses as Bellatrix in order to gain access to her vault at Gringotts. Thankfully she gets away with it, just, with her, Harry and Ron able to leave with Helga Hufflepuff’s old cup - which had been turned into a Horcrux by the Dark Lord many years before.
4 Garrick Ollivander
Garrick Ollivander pops up in The Sorcerer’s Stone - and fans have to wait all the way until Deathly Hallows: Part 1 in order to see him again.
Ollivander details how he was tortured by Lord Voldemort after failing to explain how the Dark Lord and Harry’s wands were connected. Even when he does give the villain what he’s looking for, he’s tortured again after being adjudged to have lied. The wandmaker is kept at Malfoy Manor for over a year but, fortunately, is able to escape when Dobby the House Elf comes to his rescue.
3 Peter Pettigrew
Peter Pettigrew had never been the most loyal of Death Eaters - something Lord Voldemort himself is fully aware of. And just because he helps the villain return in the Goblet of Fire doesn’t mean he’s earned his master’s trust.
Voldemort puts a protective measure in place, creating Pettigrew a bright silver hand programmed to turn on him the moment he shows any hesitancy in following the Dark Lord’s instructions. And that same hand horrifically kills Wormtail when he pauses to give thought to letting Harry, Ron, and others escape Malfoy Manor in one of the most brutal deaths in the series. It’s no surprise this wasn’t shown in the movie.
2 Xenophilius Lovegood
Xenophilius Lovegood is the editor of the Quibbler, a strange magazine that streamlines to become one of the most important during the closing stages of the second wizarding war. Xenophilius chooses to back Harry repeatedly amid his fight with Lord Voldemort, failing to fall into line with the Dark Lord’s wishes.
His punishment? Poor Luna Lovegood, his only child, is taken prisoner. This forces her father into falling in line and his desperation is summed up when he attempts to snitch on Harry, Ron, and Hermione to the Death Eaters in the Deathly Hallows: Part 1. Fortunately, they’re able to escape just in time.
1 Neville Longbottom
When Neville Longbottom first appears, he’s shown as somebody lacking courage. But as events unfold throughout the series he becomes a man transformed, one willing to stand up for good no matter what stands in his way.
He fully disobeys Lord Voldemort’s call to fall in line in the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 movie and in the book. In the movie, he’s punished by being blown away with a rather strong curse. But, in the source material, Neville is immobilized and forced to wear the flaming Sorting Hat on top of his head. Again, this was a scene that Warner Bros perhaps cut in order to save some younger viewers from a rather scarring experience.
