Despite officially exiting The Walking Dead, Danai Gurira's Michonne could still remain in the show's universe, possibly through the planned Rick Grimes feature films. Gurira announced her departure early last year following the show's season 10 renewal and officially had her final episode this past Sunday. She first joined the show in season 3 and remained a crucial part of the show's cast up until her exit. Fans were worried Michonne could die like many other characters when their actors decide to leave the show, but Michonne's last episode ended with her decidedly alive.
After finding proof that her partner Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) is actually alive, Michonne decided to set out and find him. She said goodbye to her and Rick's daughter Judith (Cailey Fleming), and, in the final moments of the episode, joins up with a new group survivors. Since Lincoln's departure at the end of 2018, fans have wondered what became of the former deputy. Their questions will eventually be answered thanks to a series of planned feature films centered on Rick. Not much is known about those films, but now it seems there is a chance Michonne could make an appearance.
Following Michonne's final episode, The Walking Dead's chief content officer Scott M. Gimple spoke with THR about what Michonne's exit means for the future of the franchise, and he admitted the door is wide open for Gurira to appear in the Walking Dead films. As Gimple said:
Is it fair to assume? It's definitely fair to assume that. There might even be her own story along the way. Some of it has to do with the way we're playing around with the story right now. There's this whole new story strand opened up with her departure.
Gimple then went on to suggest that even if Michonne doesn't join the films, there's an opportunity for more stories centered on her. Beyond Gimple's current plans, he explained, "I have some ambitions. I love her and Rick together, but I love seeing her as the pure lead on her own, too. It just so happens that there's a lot of story terrain to cover. But you're right: it's ambitions. Right now, the plans have to do with the feature film." Now that Gurira has left The Walking Dead, she's set to write the HBO Max miniseries Americanah, and she is expected to return to the Marvel universe in Black Panther 2. However, that's not to say she won't be able to find time for another visit to the Walking Dead universe.
Considering the relationship between Michonne and Rick, it would make sense to include her in his feature film adventures, especially now that she's left the show to find him. Otherwise, it could feel like Michonne's story is incomplete. Fans were so invested in Rick and Michonne's relationship, and it would be incredibly exciting to see them reunited on the big screen. Since there are currently plans for three Walking Dead films (which are reportedly still in the drafting stage), there are plenty of opportunities for Michonne to have a role if Gurira is interested.
The Walking Dead season 10 continues with "Look at the Flowers" on Sunday, March 29 on AMC.
