One of the reasons why the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been far more successful than its imitators is that its movies are neatly organized into “Phases.” Phase 3 ended last summer with Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Phase 4 has been delayed due to the coronavirus outbreak. But despite the fact that Phase 4 hasn’t even begun yet, rumors have persisted about Phase 5.
Rumors are just rumors, and we shouldn’t put too much stock in them, but at least a slim fraction of MCU rumors turn out to be true. So, here are the 10 most tantalizing rumors about the MCU’s Phase 5.
10 Deadpool Will Join The MCU
With a few cryptic social media posts, Ryan Reynolds has hinted that Deadpool will be joining the MCU’s mainline narrative in Phase 5. According to unconfirmed reports, the Merc with a Mouth is the only X-Men character that Disney isn’t planning to reboot, because if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.
Deadpool 2’s time travel contradicted Avengers: Endgame’s time travel, but that hardly seems like a suitable reason to throw out two great superhero movies — especially movies as self-aware as Deadpool.
9 The Young Avengers Will Assemble
Kevin Feige has hinted that the introduction of younger superheroes in the MCU could lead to a Young Avengers team assembling on-screen. In Phase 4, Kamala Khan will become Ms. Marvel, and Kate Bishop will take over Clint Barton’s duties as Hawkeye.
On top of that, Harley Keener could become Iron Lad, and Cassie Lang could become Stature. It stands to reason that as the MCU’s roster of characters expands, we’ll see a few different Avengers teams, and the Young Avengers could be one of them.
8 John Krasinski And Emily Blunt Will Play Mr. Fantastic And The Invisible Woman
Ever since the first rumblings of Disney acquiring 21st Century Fox, Marvel fans have been naming their casting picks for the Fantastic Four’s inevitable introduction into the MCU. One of the most popular choices for the roles of Reed Richards and Susan Storm is real-life married couple John Krasinski and Emily Blunt.
Benedict Cumberbatch’s casting as Stephen Strange has given fans hope that their casting wishes can come true, and Krasinski himself has said that he’d be open to it, so this could happen.
7 Drax’s Daughter Is Alive
The beginning of Drax’s MCU arc saw him driven by the desire to avenge his wife and daughter, who were killed by Ronan the Accuser at the request of Thanos. Now that both Ronan and Thanos have both been killed, although not directly by Drax’s hand on either count, Drax’s family has been avenged.
However, according to one rumor, his daughter never needed to be avenged in the first place because she’s still alive. If this rumor is true, it’ll be revealed in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, along with (according to the same rumor) Rocket’s creator and Gamora’s whereabouts.
6 Wakanda Will Go To War With Atlantis
Okoye’s mention of an undersea earthquake off the coast of Wakanda in Avengers: Endgame was seen by many Marvel fans as an Easter egg setting up the introduction of Atlantis — and by extension, its king, Namor — in the MCU. This has been teased since way back in Iron Man 2, so it’s been a long time coming.
The first movie to be announced for the MCU’s Phase 5 was Black Panther II. One storyline rumored for the sequel is Wakanda going to war with Atlantis, establishing a rivalry between T’Challa and Namor.
5 The Punisher Will Return
An unfortunate side effect of Disney getting its own streaming service was all the MCU-related Netflix series immediately getting canned. Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle was the most faithful and popular on-screen incarnation of the Punisher yet.
It would be a real shame if we never get to see Bernthal in character as the Punisher again, but with Deadpool reportedly getting an R-rated solo movie in the MCU, and Blade joining the franchise, there’s a chance the Punisher could return.
4 Joss Whedon Will Direct The MCU’s First X-Men Movie
It’s been rumored that Marvel is looking to tap Joss Whedon to helm the MCU’s first X-Men movie. Whedon wrote and directed 2012’s The Avengers, which introduced one iconic superhero team to the MCU, so it makes sense that he’s the guy they’d hire to introduce another one.
Plus, the studio can give him more creative freedom to make up for the restrictions that Ike Perlmutter put on Age of Ultron. Whedon has written a bunch of X-Men comics for Marvel, and he once drafted a script for an X-Men movie for Fox, so he’d be perfect for the job.
3 Galactus Is Coming
With the Mad Titan out of the way, the MCU is in need of another major villain. The story needs to build up to their introduction, like the Infinity Saga did with the coming of Thanos, and a cosmic warlord who committed genocide on a universal scale will be tricky to top. There have been many rumors about the MCU’s next big bad (Doctor Doom, Magneto, Kang the Conqueror, Norman Osborn etc.), but the most exciting one is arguably Galactus.
If he’s depicted as he is in the comics — as a gigantic, planet-eating humanoid — and not like the cloud he was in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, then it could be a lot of cinematic fun.
2 Spider-Man Will Face The Sinister Six
From the Vulture’s jail sentence to Mysterio revealing Peter Parker’s identity to the world, the MCU’s Spider-Man solo trilogy seems to have been setting up the Sinister Six from the offset.
Sony seems unlikely to hand over all the Sinister Six characters to Disney, but it seems like the endgame is to link Spidey’s MCU movies to Sony’s own Spider-Man movie franchise. If Spidey’s third MCU solo movie introduces the Sinister Six, then their exploits could continue in the Sony-verse.
1 Avengers 5 Will Adapt The “Secret Wars” Storyline
After the cultural landmark that is Avengers: Endgame, Avengers 5 will need to have a pretty epic storyline. There’s a rumor that it’ll adapt the “Secret Wars” arc, in which a cosmic entity named the Beyonder teleports a bunch of Marvel heroes and villains to a planet he created called “Battleworld” to fight each other for his amusement.
This storyline is enormous in scale, and it involves characters from the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men, so it could be a great way to bring new and old MCU heroes together.
