The DC Universe shows were never meant to crossover with The CW's Arrowverse, according to Arrow co-creator Marc Guggenheim. Audiences around the globe were stunned when the multi-part Arrowverse event, Crisis On Infinite Earths, managed to unify not just The CW's superhero continuity but also DC Universe shows and the DCEU films. As alternate Earths were destroyed, condensed, remixed and remade characters from Doom Patrol, Stargirl, Titans, Swamp Thing, and Justice League (plus many more) appeared in small cameos throughout the 5-part story.
The CW has had a string of hits ever since launching Arrow in 2012. Out of that show, they were able to spin-off The Flash, Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl, Batwoman, and soon, Superman & Lois. Initially, characters from one CW show would pop up in an episode or two of another. Then they got bolder. More characters began to appear in each other's shows, and for longer episodic stretches. Crisis On Infinite Earths, however, brought things to a whole new level. Not only did that show feature all The CW characters, but the producers went out of their way to include as many DC characters as they could. Everyone from Lucifer actor Tom Ellis to Smallville star Tom Welling made appearances on the show. It was a huge treat for longtime fans, but, as it turns out, it was also a huge task.
Arrowverse executive consultant Marc Guggenheim spoke to Fake Nerd Podcast about the complexities of bringing all these characters together. He begins by stressing that "a lot of the other shows" were produced with an "expectation that they would never have to participate in The CW crossover." Guggenheim explains that "creative assurances" were made to producers and actors on these other shows. "[This] is an Arrowverse event, it’s done on the Arrowverse shows, and when we were breaking the story, we were always trying to find the right balance between, ‘OK, well, how many non-Arrowverse characters should we bring into this,'" Guggenheim says.
Guggenheim states additional concerns about allowing the Arrowverse heroes to be "co-opted by characters that, quite frankly, viewers who don’t watch those other shows wouldn’t know and understand." There were also logistical hurdles to leap, like different locations each show calls home. He points out that the Arrowverse shows shoot in Vancouver, whereas Doom Patrol films in Atlanta and Titans is made in Toronto.
It's evident from Guggenheim's comments that putting together such an extensive roster of comic book characters is no easy task. Crisis On Infinite Earths was compared to Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War since both properties attempted to bring all their respective characters into a single, cohesive storyline. However, Marvel owns and controls all the characters that appeared in Infinity War. In contrast, DC's various properties appear in different places, from their DC Universe app to Fox, and, of course, The CW. This is why Guggenheim stresses how incredibly complex it was to coordinate Arrowverse and DC Universe characters to appear on The CW shows. Thankfully, the various creatives were able to work out the details to bring fans 5-hours of incredible entertainment.
