HBO's The Outsider: Moral Alignments Of The Main Characters

The HBO mini-series The Outsider follows Ralph Anderson as he and a group of investigators consisting of two private investigators, a lawyer, and a security guard investigate the mysterious death of local boy Frankie Peterson. The crime scene implicates Terry Maitland, who also has an airtight alibi placing him hours away from the murder at the time it took place. This leads to an investigation that falls down a supernatural rabbit hole.

The prospect of the supernatural being involved in the murder divided the group of investigators with some being initially skeptical and others accepting the theory immediately. This division was a result of the characters' varying personalities and their own personal motivations, the latter of which is fueled by their individual moral compasses. Each investigator involved was motivated to find answers whether it was out of greed, an obligation to the truth, or an obligation to the law.

10 Glory Maitland - Neutral Good

Glory's primary goals are the preservation of her family, especially in the wake of her husband Terry's death. She is reluctant to get involved in the investigation after Terry's death and is especially reluctant to involve her daughters, even when they prove helpful to the investigation.

This shows that Glory is good at heart but clearly feels neutral toward the law; she has no qualms disregarding law enforcement when she feels their motives are questionable but also will take advantage of the justice system when it benefits her, such as when she sought to sue the District Attorney's office and the Cherokee City Police Department.

9 Alec Pelley - Lawful Good

Alec Pelley is a war veteran and private investigator brought on by attorney Howie Saloman. From the start, he investigated the case with the goal of proving Terry's innocence. He worked closely with Howie and the Maitland family to do so and even suggested hiring Holly Gibney for extra help after Ralph had joined the investigation.

Likely because of his experience in the military, Alec is driven by duty. He at first was deterred by the idea of traveling to Tennessee to face El Cuco but eventually came around to the idea and even convinced Howie to come along as well.

8 Howie Saloman - Lawful Neutral

Howie Saloman is a criminal defense attorney and friend of Terry Maitland and his family. As such, he took on Terry's case. Howie has defended people ranging from the likes of Terry Maitland and Claude Bolton to what he essentially refers to as downright scumbags.

While it seems that he does abide by and respect the law, he also seems to have his own code to follow alongside the law, which is likely necessary for a criminal defense attorney, which, while still lawful, also makes him a more neutral character.

7 Andy Katcavage - Neutral Good

Andy Katcavage is a former private investigator and current security guard from Dayton, Ohio. He met Holly in Dayton when she was investigating Terry and his family's visit there. He helps Holly with her investigation and eventually drops everything and goes to Cherokee City and later Tennessee to help more with the investigation.

Like Glory, Andy clearly is good and wants to help people. However, he seems to have an easy time shirking responsibilities such as his job so that he can be part of the investigation, something in which he is interested, and be close to Holly once again.

6 Jeannie Anderson - Neutral Good

Jeannie Anderson, while not in law enforcement, still works with her husband Ralph and the rest of the team in order to solve the Peterson murder. She acts as the liaison between the Maitland family and the investigation, providing a much-needed buffer for the family during a difficult time.

Being married to a law enforcement officer, she clearly respects the law, but she has also shown that she will not always abide by it if necessary. She encouraged her husband to privately continue investigating the case even though he was put on leave and saw the importance of keeping the Maitland family in the know. However, she also was not afraid to ask her husband to stop the investigation once she believed his life was at stake.

5 Yunis Sablo - Lawful Good

Yunis Sablo is a state police officer in Georgia who was tasked with investigating the Peterson murder when Terry Maitland was still a suspect. He is one of the most objective people working on the case and ultimately accepted the most logical conclusion that Holly could find, which ironically happened to involve the supernatural being El Cuco.

He even helped Ralph when the state was no longer involved in the investigation. While such behavior may indicate a more neutral stance, he was helping out the investigation because he truly believed it was the right thing to do. Furthermore, the fact that he believed Holly's theory about El Cuco shows that he also believes in the competency of law enforcement and private investigators, even in the face of the outlandish, emphasizing his lawfulness.

4 Claude Bolton - Chaotic Good

Claude Bolton worked as a security guard and bouncer at a strip club for most of the series, but he ended up moving in with his brother Seale in Tennessee, seeking a fresh start. It is also revealed in the show that he has a history of drug abuse and has served jail time for unspecified criminal activity that is most likely drug use.

His troubled past, desire for a fresh start, and the fact that he was okay working at a strip club show that he is good, but he is also led by chaos.

3 Jack Hoskins - True Neutral

Jack Hoskins is one of the antagonists in the show. While he is not inherently evil, he is driven primarily by self-interest. While he works in law enforcement and seems good enough at his job that he gets called back to duty when the department is short-handed, he has shown that he can go against the law when it serves him.

He kidnapped Holly, killed an officer, and sought to kill the entire group of investigators at the prospect of saving his own life from El Cuco, showing that he does not care for any person's life but his own.

2 Holly Gibney - Chaotic Good

Holly Gibney generally resides on the side of "good." She is a private investigator who has been involved in a number of murder cases, from Bill Hodges's pursuit of Mr. Mercedes, which is not mentioned in the show, to the search for El Cuco. She believes in doing the right thing but is open to doing so by any means necessary.

This includes believing in El Cuco, something that Ralph Anderson and Glory Maitland initially equate to the boogeyman. She also was one of the proponents of killing El Cuco, believing that that was the only way to stop it.

1 Ralph Anderson - Lawful Neutral

Ralph Anderson is a Cherokee City detective who is put on leave after being injured and killing Ollie Peterson, Frankie's older brother, in self-defense while attempting to prosecute Terry Maitland for Frankie's murder. After he was put on leave and faced new evidence suggesting that Terry did not, in fact, kill Frankie, he continued the investigation with Howie, Alec, Holly, and Yunis.

Ralph clearly follows the letter of the law until he feels it is inadequate. Then, he will take matters into his own hands to ensure that the right person or entity is brought to justice, even if it means suspending his disbelief and acknowledging El Cuco exists.
