The classic fairy tale Cinderella is about a young woman mistreated by her step-family, who wished for a new life. With the help of animal sidekicks and a fairy godmother, Cinderella was given the chance to dance at the prince's ball where the two just so happened to fall in love mid-dance. But just as luck would have it, her spell ran out at midnight, and Cinderella disappeared into the night, leaving the prince on a hunt to find his one true love.
Disney has retold this classic story for years with its 1950 animated version and its live-action film in 2015, but now it's Sony's turn. In 2019, it was said that Cinderella would be given yet another live-action film, this time with a twist. For those looking to know more about the twists this new Cinderella film will bring, keep reading!
10 Camila Cabello Will Star As Cinderella
That's right! Former Fifth Harmony star Camila Cabello will be starring as the titular heroine. This is Cabello's first cinematic experience as the main character but she's sure to be a knockout. Cabello will also be a big part of the movie's music, as one can imagine.
9 Idina Menzel Will Portray Cinderella's Evil Stepmother
Idina Menzel has got to be one of the most instrumental women in the theater world. Her resume is full of iconic performances that show off both her acting ability and her incredible vocals. Let's not forget that she is the voice behind Frozen's Elsa.
With Idina Menzel attached to this project, that alone is asking for success. But who will Menzel portray? The Fairy Godmother, perhaps? Nope. She will show off her wicked spirit as Cinderella's evil stepmother. We can't wait to see her go head-to-head with Cinderella.
8 Cinderella's Fairy Godmother Will Be Iconic
Cinderella's Fairy Godmother may not have a starring role in the animated version, but her presence is important to the story. Without her, Cinderella wouldn't have made it to the ball or escaped the clutches of her step-family.
In this live-action remake, the Fairy Godmother will be portrayed by Pose actor Billy Porter. His character will be unlike anything we've seen before with prior Cinderella tales. In this case, the Fairy Godmother will be gender fluid. As Porter says, "Magic has no gender."
7 Production Has Been Suspended
Filming this live-action adaptation of Cinderella began in February 2020, but after the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, production has come to a halt, as is the case with so many other movies. Thanks to Instagram snaps from Cabello and director Kay Cannon, we know that production began in the UK, and will likely pick up where the started when travel bans have been lifted.
6 Expect An Appearance From A Famous Rapper
It's been said that this version of Cinderella will be unlike any other tale we've ever seen before. Aside from Camila Cabello starring as Cinderella and Idina Menzel as the evil stepmother, rapper Missy Elliott will also be making an appearance in the classic tale.
She'll go on to be the Town Crier in the film, who's essentially the spokesperson from the royal family to the commoners. If the movie follows the animated version at all, it will most likely be this character who informs the village about the prince's ball, and later leads the hunt for Cinderella when she runs away.
5 Made By Sony, Produced By James Corden
Unlike Disney's animated version of Cinderella in 1950 and its live-action tale in 2015, this movie will be backed by Sony. There will be no affiliation with Disney, but the film is connected to funnyman James Corden. His production company Fulwell 73 is fueling the project, with director Kay Cannon behind the camera. Cannon has also worked on projects like Pitch Perfect, 30 Rock, and Netflix's Girl Boss. With the hilarious and inquisitive minds of Cannon and Corden, this version of Cinderella is bound to be epic.
4 It Will Be A Musical Comedy
We can't have singers like Camila Cabello, Idina Menzel, Billy Porter, and Missy Elliott in Cinderella, and not showcase their gobsmacking talents. The live-action remake is said to be a musical comedy on par with A Cinderella Story. It will be modern, romantic, comedic, and beyond. When you think about the projects these cast and crew have previously worked on, it's easy to see that Cinderella will be a healthy combination of all things funny and whimsical.
3 Pierce Brosnan Has Signed On As King
In Disney's animated version of Cinderella, the king isn't necessarily easy on the eyes. He's an older man who's quite pompous, and doesn't even look related to his son, the prince. But in this reboot of Cinderella, the king may be even more dashing than his heir! Pierce Brosnan has officially signed on to be the king. The former James Bond star has dabbled in musicals like Mamma Mia!, and may show off his vocal talents in this new film.
2 Newcomer Nicholas Galitzine Will Be Cinderella's Prince
We all know Camila Cabello is starring as Cinderella, but who is cast as her prince? The prince has a large role in this story as he's on a journey to find his one true love, and will be portrayed by Nicholas Galitzine. The UK actor has been said to "wowed" casting directors, and is ready for his big role with Sony.
Galitzine has been seen in The Beat Beneath My Feet with Luke Perry, and is in Netflix's Chambers alongside actress Uma Thurman, but he's relatively new to the professional acting world.
1 Will Cinderella's Stepsisters Be As Sinister As The Animated Version?
It's sad, but motivates makes Cinderella thrive and become the best version of herself are her bullies: her evil stepsisters, named Anastasia and Narissa in this version. These two young women were totally ruled by their mother, and treated Cinderella horribly because they were essentially raised to do so. While we've seen the stepsister portrayed in a few different ways over the years, it'll be interesting to see how their personalities are in Corden's version of the story. Hairspray Live!'s Maddie Baillio will star as Anastasia, and Baghdad Central's Charlotte Spencer will portray Narissa.
