One of the best parts of Parks and Recreation was watching the friendship grow between Ann Perkins and our favorite former government employee, Leslie Knope. While the two women met in dark circumstances (that dreaded man-eating pit), they created a strong bond the ended in amazing nicknames, friendship anniversaries, and scrapbooks.
Although Leslie and Ann were BFF goals (dare we say their friendship created Galentine’s Day?) during Parks and Rec’s seven seasons, these two definitely butted heads. Leslie was guilty of steamrolling her so-called best friend and Ann definitely didn’t always appreciate Leslie’s helping hand. With that being said, let’s take a look at 10 times these ladies were plain old nasty to each other.
10 Ann Wanted Justin For Herself (Even Though He Liked Leslie)
When Ann was dating Mark, we learned about her friend Justin. Justin was a very attractive lawyer and the two had such a close bond that it was confusing why the two of them weren’t dating. Although Ann was happy with Mark, she didn’t help Leslie out when she expressed interest in Justin.
As it turns out, Ann was playing a personal game of dibs. Justin was always her back up in case she and Andy never worked out but hoarding a great man from your best friend just because he’s an option for the future is pretty selfish.
9 Leslie Steamrolled Ann Into Getting What She Wanted
It’s been said multiple times throughout the show’s seven seasons: Leslie is a steamroller. She pushes her thoughts, views, and ideas on anyone close to her. Anytime someone thinks differently, Leslie makes it a big deal and bullies them until she gets her way.
Leslie’s passion for the government is heartwarming but it’s not worth hurting and muting her best friends. This side of her came out when Ann didn't spend the night preparing for a job interview and went to the bar instead.
8 Ann Butchers Leslie's Campaign
Granted, Ann warned Leslie that she had no idea how to be a campaign manager but Leslie ignored her plea. Nevertheless, Leslie’s first go on the campaign trail was a disaster under Ann’s managerial eye. The only reason she got Pistol Pete to show up at Leslie’s first event was that she talked to him about his mental health issues.
In the end, it appears Pete followed through with Leslie in hopes of scoring a date with Ann. She turned him down but came back around when she was looking for sperm donors, which was just unfair to a man who actually had feelings for her. Either way, Ann's potential career as a campaign manager ended quickly.
7 Leslie Tried To Sabotage Ann's Relationship With Mark
In season one, we learn that Leslie and Mark slept together five years before the documentary started. It was a one-night-stand and was clearly insignificant because Mark forgot about the whole thing.
When Leslie and Ann become closer, Mark and Ann obviously start liking each other but Leslie made the entire idea a problem because of a fling that was five years old. Ann pulled away from Mark after seeing how upset Leslie was at the idea of her seeing him but Leslie was being selfish. She and Mark clearly had nothing happening between them and keeping Ann away from him were incredibly young.
6 Ann Rushed Leslie's Date With Dave
When Leslie and Dave the cop started expressing interest in one another, Leslie was giddy about the potential relationship but was nervous for their first date. And while Ann had good intentions, her helpfulness was overdone.
The two women partook in a fake date to prepare Leslie but all Ann did was scare the jitters right out of her (and into a few glasses of wine). Leslie ended up getting so drunk that she bombarded Dave’s house and uncomfortably put the moves on him, which, of course, embarrassed her.
5 Leslie Tried Auctioning Off Ann
In the fifth season, Leslie creates a garage sale fundraiser to raise money. The people of Pawnee showed up to sell house goods they no longer needed and we see Ann selling parts of her past. She told the cameras that she changes who she is in every new relationship so she sells all the old parts of her.
But when Leslie isn't satisfied with how much money they've raised, she decides to auction off Ann to the highest bidder without even talking to Ann about it in the first place. And while it was for a good cause, the highest bidder was super creepy and Leslie was still hellbent on selling her for a date!
4 Ann Wasn't Truthful About Dating Tom
In the episode "Operation Ann," it's Valentine's Day and it's Leslie's personal mission to find a date for Ann at Pawnee's singles mixer. Sadly, all of the singles that showed up weren't up to Ann's standards but Leslie, being the amazing best friend she is—spent the entire night trying to find Mr. Right.
But after April pointed out that Ann only had chemistry with Tom, she snuck out met Tom for a drink outside of the mixer. The secrecy around the meet-up hurt Leslie deeply. For starters, she thought Ann could do better than Tom and she spent so many hours trying to find Ann a special somebody and she just bolts? Not cool.
3 Leslie Forced Mark To Propose To Ann (Even Though Ann Wanted To Break Up With Him)
In the episode "Telethon," Leslie created a "Pawnee Cares" telethon that lasted for 24 hours and benefited diabetes. Ann didn't work for the park's department but still helped Leslie as a concerned member of the community (and as a nurse).
When the telethon doesn't go the way Leslie hopes, she encourages Mark to propose to Ann on TV as a way to bring in viewership and money. However, what Leslie selfishly didn't realize is that Ann didn't want a future with Mark. She really liked Mark but if Leslie had been paying attention to her, she would have realized Ann was unhappy. Leslie then had to go on a wild goose chase to convince Mark not to go through with the proposal.
2 Ann Wasn't Thankful For The Public Relations Job At First
In the episode “The Fight,” Leslie becomes ecstatic when the health department's public relations director job opens up in city hall. With Ann being a nurse and looking for a change, it made all the sense in the world for her to at least apply for the position. The only problem is Ann wasn’t sure she wanted to take the job. Leslie just assumed Ann would want it and pushed it on her.
To make everything worse, Leslie gave Ann a ton of reading material so she could ace the interview but Leslie wanted to go to the bar with her friends like everyone else. The entire ordeal ended in Leslie and Ann’s first big fight (and an incredible episode).
1 Leslie Pressured Ann To Date Chris For Her Benefit
When Chris and Ben first come to Pawnee, Leslie detests everything about them for wanting to shut down the government. After trying to expand the parks department’s budget, she decides a better way to get what she wants is with Ann’s help. Leslie convinces Ann to go on a date with Chris to drop a few hints about the parks and rec. department deserving the funding.
Ann didn’t want to do it but did it for her friend. In the end, Leslie messes up the plan and confirms to Chris that Ann was just using him, making Ann look like a horrible person for Leslie’s idea.
