As the name suggests, Star Wars is a pop culture phenomenon that is chock full of war, battle, and conflict. While there is a large section of the Galaxy opposed to war, there are times it is necessary. One of the longest-standing conflicts has been between the Sith and the Jedi.
Through the years with the Sith in hiding, the Republic was the institution ensuring peace in the Galaxy - until Palpatine rose to power that is. Working with the Jedi as peacekeepers, the Republic was the central government in the Galaxy but had a lot of issues. These issues bring about a crucial question, which was better for the Galaxy, the Republic, or the Sith?
10 SITH: A CHANGE
As much as it may seem like change is a weak argument, think about the amount of time that the Galactic Republic was in power. For hundreds of years, the Republic ruled, with its Senate and Supreme Chancellor as head of state.
The modern Republic seen in the prequels was the political institution for a thousand years. The Sith bring, and brought, a change from this. There were many people disgruntled with the Republic, who could have only been happy at the very start of Palpatine's reign. A lot of regular Galactic citizens had no clue about Jedi and Sith, so a change from the Republic would be welcome.
9 REPUBLIC: REPRESENTATION
One thing that the Republic will always have over the rule of the Sith is its representation throughout the Galaxy. There are senators from the planets within Republic jurisdiction, which give the Senate a plethora of species and voices.
The Sith in power care for themselves, for their ideologies and imposing them on the Galaxy with their army at their back, for example, the Empire, they represent themselves. The Republic allows for many ideas to be heard for compromise to come to aid the needs of a variety of people.
8 SITH: HAS A NATURAL CHAIN OF SUCCESSION
The Rule of Two is the most famous and followed belief of the Sith. Birthed from the mind of Darth Bane, the last survivor of the Jedi-Sith war, the Rule states there can be no more than two Sith, a master, and an apprentice.
What this allows for the Sith is their apprentice will eventually replace a chain of succession to be there in existence as the leader of the Sith. The goals of the Sith could alter slightly or significantly as the leader changes, while the dragging process of electing new leaders would be gone.
7 REPUBLIC: CARE FOR THE PEOPLE
This is not a universal quality of the entire Republic. Some pockets care only for themselves, and a lot will place their needs over others.
Nevertheless, it is clear, specifically throughout The Clone Wars, that the Republic and its members - such as Padmé, the clones, the Jedi, other senators - cares for people and will help those who need it. Using the Empire under the reign of Palpatine as an example, they consistently use violence, they ridicule local people and generally do not care.
6 SITH: WILL DO ANYTHING NECESSARY TO RETAIN THEIR POWER
The Sith care for nothing more than their power. They live to live and to reign, and they go to extreme measures to keep their power, whether it be violence, collateral damage, or mass murder.
This obviously is not great for the Galaxy, but what it does is provide order, it gives a firm rule. While the Republic has its limits on what it would do, the Sith have no such restriction and so to protect their control would do anything, keeping the Galaxy in check, preserving a lot of it (inadvertently or not), and giving it a stable leadership.
5 REPUBLIC: DEMOCRACY OVER DICTATORSHIP
While a natural chain of succession would remove the process of election, and give way for automatic change which is necessary within the Galaxy, it is not something that compares to a democracy.
The Sith ruling is a dictatorship. They are one person aided by their apprentice who will soon kill them and then become the leader themself. It is one person ruling a Galaxy stacked with people. The Republic offers democracy, the chance for people to be heard and elect people to represent them, and have their concerns raised, their voices heard, their problems met with solutions which the Sith would not offer.
4 SITH: REPUBLIC WAS WEAK
The prequel trilogy does not do a great job depicting the Republic and the Senate as an institution that can get things done. The solution to the problems on Naboo was to form a committee, and throughout the time we see the ineffectiveness of the Republic politically.
The Sith are strong and can get things done. Despite the evil, the violence, and everything else, they are not weak, and they do and can achieve what they want to achieve. Something fans have seen sorely lacking in the Republic.
3 REPUBLIC: SEEKS SERENITY
"Peace is a lie, there is only passion." is the first line of the Sith Code. The third line of the Jedi Code reads, "There is no passion, there is serenity." While passion is a valuable asset, for a Galaxy, the goal should be peace.
Both the Jedi and Republic wanted peace for the Galaxy. The Jedi enforced the peace that the Republic sought. The Sith crave power, chaos, war, and this is not good for a galaxy, war is not a good thing, it is an occasional necessity. Serenity throughout the Galaxy is the real goal.
2 SITH: THE REPUBLIC WAS CORRUPT
Despite being democratic, despite seeking peace and serenity across the Galaxy, the Republic coupled its earlier mentioned weakness, with a whole load of corruption.
There was so much backstabbing and so many shady deals going on within the Senate. There were so many plots that went unnoticed right under people's noses, look at how Palpatine manipulated the Clone War. Some people preferred credits rather than doing the right thing.
1 REPUBLIC: THE SITH WERE EVIL
Ultimately, the argument between which is better, and who was right between the Galactic Republic and the Sith Order comes down to one factor, the evilness of the Sith.
The Republic and the Jedi had their problems as groups, but they were not evil, particularly not the Jedi. The Sith though, used fear as a way of ruling, unlimited power as a constant goal, hatred, and anger as tools against any who opposed them. The Sith were evil and ultimately did not deserve to rule the Galaxy.
