Schitt's Creek: Why Alexis & Ted Don't End Up Together

Alexis Rose (Annie Murphy) and Ted Mullens (Dustin Milligan) were perfect for each other, but there was a justifiable reason they didn't end up together in Schitt's Creek. Ted was a fixture in Alexis' life from the start of her relocation to the small rural town. Along with her parents, Johnny (Eugene Levy) and Moira (Catherine O'Hara), and brother David (Dan Levy), the Rose family was forced to move from their mansion into the small local motel after losing their fortune. Ted was initially introduced as the veterinarian in town, but he quickly became a love interest for Alexis.

Despite the chemistry between Alexis and Ted, their romantic journey wasn't always easy. Ted may not have lived lavish lifestyles like Alexis' past boyfriends, but he was clearly infatuated with her. He even proposed shortly after dating, which initially scared off Alexis. The two broke off the engagement, but they remained close friends. In fact, Ted gave Alexis a job as a receptionist at his vet practice when she was in need of paying for her continuing education. While Ted dated other women, Alexis realized how truly she cared for him, leading them to get back together at the end of Schitt's Creek season 4.

The relationship between Alexis and Ted went strong heading into the show's sixth and final season. They hit a bump in the road when Ted was accepted into a six-month research program in the Galápagos Islands. The duo took a shot at long-distance, but it was clear the situation wasn't fair to either party. In season 6's "The Presidential Suite," Ted surprised Alexis by returning to Schitt's Creek. The pair professed their love, but they amicably decided it would be best to break up, considering they were heading in different directions with their respective dream jobs. The couple's fate was much different from the original plan unveiled by Dan Levy, who revealed (via EW) that Alexis and Ted were supposed to be married by the end of the series.

Aside from the wedding between David and Patrick Brewer (Noah Reid), Schitt's Creek was meant to feature nuptials between Alexis and Ted. Levy, who co-created the series with his father, Eugene, planned for the double wedding but changed up the scenario when Alexis' storyline evolved. When asked why he broke up Alexis and Ted, Levy explained: "Alexis needed to come out of this show liberated in a way that wasn't necessarily attached to a guy." He added how important it was for Murphy's character to head down another path after having "loved and lost" rather than settle down in a town that didn't meet her career trajectory.

Murphy, who was initially on board with the idea of her character ending up with Ted, was initially upset with the change. Like the audience, Murphy was rooting for Alexis and Ted to find a happily ever after, but the outcome was justifiable. Alexis was in the midst of growing her new PR career, and she wouldn't have been able to do that from the Galápagos Islands. She and Ted both knew that, as hard as it was to come to terms with. It's nice to think that the paths of Alexis and Ted would cross years down the line. Until Schitt's Creek returns for another chapter in the form of a revival (if that ever happens), the pair's fate will remain a mystery.
