A new trailer was released for the back half of Superman & Lois season 1 — teasing more cinematic action and even darker family dynamics. Having debuted in 2016, Tyler Hoechlin's version of Clark Kent (a.k.a. Superman) had already become a staple of the Arrowverse. Early in 2021, however, the iconic character finally took center stage. Reprising the cape alongside Elizabeth Tulloch's Lois Lane, Superman & Lois aired five episodes of its inaugural season before going on hiatus. With the sixth and final season of Supergirl wrapping up its "Phantom Zone" arc, however, the return of the Man of Steel and family moved ever closer.
Played by Jordan Elsass and Alex Garfin, respectively, the titular duo were joined by twin sons, Jonathan and Jordan. Following the death of Martha Kent (Michele Scarabelli), Clark and Lois relocated from Metropolis to Smallville. Despite hoping for the simple life, trouble predictably soon followed. For Superman, it came in the form of Captain Luthor (Wolé Parks). For Lois, it emerged through an investigation into the mysterious endeavors of Morgan Edge (Adam Raynor). As if that wasn't enough, the danger was compounded the increasing distrust of General Sam Lane (Dylan Walsh). Equally, issues arose from only one twin developing Kryptonian superpowers — issues that spawned Superman & Lois' lingering cliffhangers.
Thanks to a new trailer released by The CW Network, fans got a taste of what happens next. The footage offered several developments that could serve to deepen (and darken) the already complex family drama. Firstly, it appeared as though the show almost served up the death of Superman — with Lois lamenting how close he came to meeting his end. Even Clark himself stated that he'd simply "got lucky". Equally, Sam Lane expressed compassion while hiding his own potential involvement. On top of all that, Jordan continued to struggle with both his newfound powers and his emotions. Seemingly becoming more inclined to use them in anger and for revenge against his former bullies, Jordan's conflict with Clark looked set to reach a boiling point and take some potentially emotional turns. Check out the new trailer below:
The footage didn't merely deliver on its storylines and themes, however. One of the biggest praises afforded to Superman & Lois was how cinematic (and unlike other Arrowverse shows) it looked. The trailer made it clear that that would continue in the remaining episodes. In fact, Superman & Lois looked set to take it to the next level in terms of spectacle. In one particularly thrilling moment, the return of the Arrowverse's alternate evil Superman was glimpsed. Furthermore, he was not alone and unleashed upon Metropolis the kind of destruction seen only in Zack Snyder's Man of Steel. It wasn't made clear whether this was another Captain Luthor flashback, how he foresaw the future, or something else. Either way, the moment will no doubt serve to intrigue and excite Superman & Lois fans all the more.
The parallel to Snyder's DCEU offerings would no doubt be a fitting one. After all, Superman & Lois season 1, episode 7 will actually be titled "Man of Steel". For all that the footage offered, it just as intriguingly left the specifics of the show's cliffhangers unresolved. For starters, there was no indication of how Jordan escaped the vengeful Tag (Wern Lee), who was last seen attacking him. Equally, despite a brief glimpse of some creepy experiment, it remained wholly mysterious what Morgan Edge intended for X-Kryptonite. Whatever the case, answers will no doubt be forthcoming — along with everything promised by the above trailer. As such, excitement for the new episode to air will no doubt reach fever-pitch in the preceding days.
Superman & Lois season 1, episode 6, "Broken Trust" will air via The CW on May 18, 2021.
