Halo Infinite Multiplayer Trailer: Returning & Missing Spartan Abilities

Halo Infinite's recent multiplayer reveal at long last highlighted a number of the new features, equipment, weapons, and vehicles that will be included with the free-to-play multiplayer title, but just as interesting is what seemed to be missing. As the developers at 343 Industries stressed during multiple presentations regarding Halo Infinite's multiplayer, 343 is focusing on giving players more tools to interact with Halo's "sandbox," and that includes a wide-variety of equipment for players to experiment with.

It's not the first time 343 has attempted to breathe new life into Halo's tried-and-true combat, with the last attempt being Halo 5's Spartan abilities. These included the ability to sprint, clamber up ledges, move rapidly in one direction with a thruster pack, as well as perform a ground-pound attack, hover in mid-air, and charge into enemies. While the Spartan abilities certainly changed the rhythm of Halo's gameplay, more than a few fans weren't exactly thrilled with many of the new tools, which were available to all players without the need to acquire a power-up or piece of equipment.

So far, it seems like the majority of those Spartan abilities won't be returning to Halo Infinite multiplayer. Depending on how players felt about Halo 5, that could be both a good thing or a bad thing. Here's what is known so far about what players will be able to do, and how 343 looks to be taking lessons from Halo 5.

From the multiplayer reveal, it looks like the majority of Halo 5's Spartan abilities won't be making an appearance in Halo Infinite, at the very least as a baseline ability for all players. That means saying goodbye to thruster packs and ground pounds, which will likely be music to many players' ears. Two abilities which looks to have made the grade, however, are the ability to sprint and clamber up ledges. These two features were probably the least intrusive when it came to Halo 5's gameplay. As sprinting is basically an expected feature in many modern FPS games, it makes sense for it to be included as a baseline tool for players to use.

Speaking of baseline abilities, assassinations - dramatic animations for killing an opponent by meleeing them from behind - have been a staple of the series since Halo: Reach. So far, it's unclear if they will be returning for Halo Infinite. At the very least, it doesn't appear that assassinations will be automatic, as the multiplayer reveal trailer shows a player being hit in the back without an extended animation to go along with it.

That all being said, there is always the possibility players will be able to pick up pieces of equipment that serve a similar function to Halo 5's various Spartan abilities. 343 Industries thus far has only shown off a handful of pieces of equipment players will be able to pick up on the battlefield, including the Grappleshot, Threat Sensor, Repulsor, and the Drop Wall, in addition to power-ups like the Overshield and Active Camouflage. It's not hard to imagine a piece of equipment like the Thruster Pack, which could allow players to dash in a direction or hover in place, like in Halo 5, making the cut. Ultimately, players will just have to wait and see what other pieces of equipment 343 has in store once the game is closer to launch.

343 Industries looks to be returning Halo to its roots by largely ditching Spartan abilities and instead focusing on having players scavenge the map for pieces of equipment which could give them a tactical advantage. Judging from the multiplayer reveal, that decision looks like it will likely pay off, and decisions like making Halo Infinite's battle passes never expire, as well as the inclusion of an in-depth training mode called "The Academy" which includes the ability to play against AI bots, shows 343 is making all the right moves. Expect more details on Halo Infinite's multiplayer in the weeks and months ahead.
