Spider-Man's Current Era Comes To A Dramatic End This Fall

Marvel Comics has just announced that Nick Spencer's three-year run on Amazing Spider-Man is coming to a close, while still promising a dramatic conclusion before new creators take the reins. Having begun in July of 2018, Spencer's run has featured a long-form narrative that has honored Spider-Man's legacy in some intriguing ways, while also involving the Web-slinger in epic showdowns with some of his most formidable foes. However, there's only a handful of issues left for Spider-Man to not only face the upcoming Sinister War, but also the final endgame of his darkest villain Kindred who's been tormenting Peter Parker since Spencer's first issue.

Nick Spencer has been joined by all-star artists over the last three years featuring the likes of Ryan Ottely, Mark Bagley, Humberto Ramos, Patrick Gleason, and more, and Peter Parker's journey has been wild to say the least. While there have been epic arcs such as "Hunted" featuring the final hunt and death of Kraven the Hunter, and "King's Random" which saw Spider-Man teaming up with the former New Avengers against Kingpin, there's also been an ongoing battle with Kindred, the demonic villain created by Spencer to torment Spider-Man. Kindred can be seen throughout the run operating in the shadows, popping in and out until he finally made his presence known to Peter Parker with Amazing Spider-Man #53, revealing himself to be Harry Osborn, albeit the Harry that was killed before the controversial One More Day retcon story from 2007. That retcon saw Peter Parker's life getting reset in a deal with Mephisto to save his aunt. That massive retcon also happened to bring back a new Harry to the land of the living, but this older demonic version of Harry has been trying to get Peter to remember the deal he made with the devil, despite the fact that it was wiped from Peter's memory by Mephisto himself.

Now, Marvel Comics has announced that Spencer's run is coming at an end with Amazing Spider-Man #74, the title's landmark 875th issue, this September. This leaves only a few issues left from Spencer for fans to look forward to before a new era begins. There are going to be plenty of challenges for the Web-slinger to tackle in the meantime such as the Sinister War, a battle of two Sinister Six teams that's already being orchestrated and set up by Kindred himself. Clearly, Kindred's endgame has finally arrived, and it will most likely see some significant changes and retcons to the One More Day reset. Here's the teaser art for Amazing Spider-Man #74, which will release as an 80-page conclusion from Nick Spencer, Mark Bagley, Patrick Gleason, Marcelo Ferreira, and more:

It's going to be really interesting to see how Spencer's run ends. Readers know that Doctor Strange himself has been looking into Spider-Man's past deal with Mephisto, questioning the demon lord in prior issues. However, it's pretty evident that Kindred and his motivations are his own and revenge-based. It's doubtful that he's working for Mephisto, though Marvel's devil certainly seems amused all the same. Kindred is incredibly powerful, and when he first captured Peter, he repeatedly killed and resurrected Spider-Man several times over with his dark powers, trying to force the Web-slinger to remember what he had done.

Hopefully, Spider-Man and his allies will be able to defeat Kindred once and for all, though it's very likely that Peter Parker will be faced with a massive paradigm shift in his life going forward. There's solid odds that he'll remember One More Day and the life he gave up and forgot, which should be huge considering a part of it was sacrificing his marriage to Mary Jane Watson. If One More Day does end up being retconned away, Nick Spencer's run on Amazing Spider-Man run will certainly be remembered for years to come.

Amazing Spider-Man #74 releases September 22nd.
