The Circle is a Netflix series about a social media competition where you’re ranked by popularity. Without ever seeing the other contestants, the participants in this game communicate solely through messaging. This means that they could be whoever they want. While some chose to take the route of authenticity, some chose to take a more calculated approach.
Alliances were formed in order to keep themselves in the competition. While some of these alliances were purely strategic, some were genuine friendships that lasted beyond the show. Here are the 5 best friendships formed on The Circle, and the 5 worst.
10 Best: Joey and Shubham
Joey and Shubham were arguably two of the most genuine and consistent players. These two got along from the very start. Joey and Shubham are loyal and proved this to each other throughout the season by saving each other from being blocked on multiple occasions. Since Shubham was an influencer more than anyone else, he had a lot of power. Each time he had the opportunity to save Joey, he did.
Their friendship was one of the ones that went beyond the show and the two are still close to this day.
9 Worst: Sammie and Ed
Ed was one of the contestants added later on in the series. While he and Sammie had a lot in common in terms of colleges and heritage, Ed was clearly taking a more flirtatious approach to him and Sammie’s conversations.
When Ed gets blocked, instead of going to see Rebecca who he confidently believed was a catfish, he went to see Sammie, in hopes of asking her out. Their friendship didn’t have any substance and was shallow compared to many of the other ones.
8 Best: Chris and Mercedeze
From the beginning, Mercedeze (A.K.A Karyn) and Chris had a lot in common. Karyn, who was the person behind the picture, is also part of the LGBTQ+ community, she felt a connection with Chris right off the bat. Chris and Mercedeze had some of the funniest interactions on the show.
After Mercedeze gets blocked, the persona falls through and Karyn had the opportunity to show herself to another contestant. She chose Chris. Their meeting was meaningful and emotional as Karyn tells Chris she wants him to represent the LBGTQ+ community while on the show.
7 Worst: Rebecca and Adam
Rebecca (A.K.A Seaburn) and Adam (A.K.A Alex) were both catfishes trying to convince each other they weren’t. While the interactions between the two were entertaining for that reason, their friendship was the fakest and definitely unauthentic. Both of them were using each other as a ploy to up their rankings.
Seaburn and Alex, the two behind the screen, did end up meeting once Adam got blocked. Seaburn and Alex may have had a genuine connection, but Adam and Rebecca certainly did not.
6 Best: Chris and Sammie
From the get-go, Chris and Sammie had each other's backs. They stayed loyal to each other, saving one another from being blocked when they were given the opportunity. The two went to each other first with new information and also confided in each other throughout the process.
Chris and Sammie’s friendship was based on a true connection from the start and they built trust within each other. Whenever someone came to see Sammie after being blocked, Chris was the first person to know, and vice-versa.
5 Worst: Antonio and Mercedeze
Antonio and Mercedeze both had similar plans from the beginning to use each other in a flirtatious way to get higher up in the rankings. This quickly went downhill the more Antonio got to know her. Antonio was suspicious of Mercedeze the whole time and accused her more than once of being a catfish, although the two still tried to play nice despite it.
After Antonio got blocked, he, of course, went to see Mercedeze. Seeing Karyn in that apartment confirmed his suspicions. Although, it’s still safe to say their on-screen friendship was as fake as it got.
4 Best: Joey and Miranda
Joey and Miranda had a few emotional moments together on the show. These two had a very real connection, which was taken off-screen when Miranda went to see him after being blocked. Miranda and Joey admitted to having genuine feelings about one another and their meeting ended with a kiss.
Their connection was as real in the chats as it was in person. The two are not romantically involved currently but have stayed close friends since. These two proved to the viewers that online friendships can be lasting.
3 Worst: Joey and Rebecca
Joey and Rebecca used each other in strategic ways over the series. They never connected like some of the other contestants did. Joey eventually did accuse Rebecca of being a catfish, so it’s safe to assume Joey didn’t trust her very much.
Joey at least deserves credit for being one of the only ones of the original players to recognize Rebecca as a catfish. Though this lack of trust really put a limit to their friendship and the viewers didn’t get to see it develop as much as the rest of the friendships.
2 Best: Shubham and Rebbeca
Shubham and Rebecca go against the norm here. Even though their friendship was based on a lie given Rebecca was, in fact, a catfish, Shubham really did connect with the person behind the screen. Seaburn and Shubham had a sibling-like relationship throughout the series and often checked in on each other to see if they were okay with what was going on. They were loyal to each other in all of the rankings and never once questioned their trust.
Rebecca ended up being a persona, but Shubham remained adamant that their friendship went beyond the photos.
1 Worst: Miranda and Sammie
Miranda and Sammie were often in a bit of competition. The two did have a few genuine moments, but for the most part, they were always up against each other. Miranda and Sammie always questioned where they stood with each other and never established a clear alliance. Miranda went so far as to accuse Sammie of not being real, which offended Sammie because she made it clear that her strategy revolved around staying true to herself.
Their competition involving Joey is a perfect example of how they two felt at odds. While friendly in nature, this proves that they felt threatened by each other in terms of the actual competition at hand.
