The Resident: 10 Hidden Details About The Main Characters Everyone Missed

The series, which has a total of 52 episodes in 2 seasons has gotten mostly positive reviews and gained critical acclaim. It has also been nominated for three awards including two Teen Choice Awards and a Young Artist Award (for Evan Whitten, a cast member). Without further ado, here are the top ten things you missed about the main cast of this breakout TV show.

10 Conrad Hawkins Is A Medical Corpsman

Conrad is the main character and right from season one, we discover Conrad served as a medical corpsman in the Marine Corps. He spent most of his time helping injured soldiers. This demonstrates his dedication and preparedness for Chastain Hospital. It was also through his work as a Marine Corpsman that he came to know and befriend Dr. Jude Silva. Dr. Silva was also Nic’s love interest from earlier in season one.

Conrad’s working as a Medical Corpsman wasn’t all so direct, but you could have picked up on that through his brute-like attitude and dictatorial approach toward fellow doctor, Dr. Devon Pravesh. That is something most uniform men are associated with.

9 Dr. Randolph Bell’s Secrets

The opening scene of the first episode went a long way in portraying (without a doubt) what kind of doctor Bell was. He prioritized keeping his reputation untainted rather than taking responsibility for his mistakes. He ordered the staff to cover up an error he had made that led to the death of a patient by blaming the incident on a medical condition – which the patient did not even have. Bell had a tremor in his hand that caused him to blunder during the operation. You might have thought that was a one-time thing, but it seems Bell is hiding some secrets from his colleagues and patients. These cases have likely been occurring a lot more than you’d think.

8 Devon Pravesh Might Be A Playboy

Dr. Devon Pravesh doesn’t seem like the type of guy to go about picking up girls left, right and center. However, there might be more to him that we see the show let on. He had been in a relationship with Priya Nair from the beginning of the show, only to call off their engagement due to his feelings for Julian Booth. Now that is the type of thing a playboy would do. It would seem justifiable that he cut Priya off because she wanted him to leave Chastain and move with her. But, the reality is that that could have been the opportunity he was waiting for all along – some excuse to justify his actions.

7 Conrad Hawkins Is A Search And Rescue Volunteer

Apart from being a full-time medical doctor at Chastain Memorial Park Hospital, Dr. Conrad Hawkins is also a search and rescue volunteer. Though we’ve been exposed mostly to his incredible lifesaving skills within the walls of Chastain Memorial Park Hospital, we saw Conrad volunteering with the Georgia Search and Rescue team in episode 21 of season 2 (“Stuck as Foretold”). Conrad helped rescue and treat a man who was the victim of a homophobic attack. Through the episode, we got to understand that Dr. Conrad Hawkins regularly volunteered with the Georgia Search and Rescue team. This makes his character all the more respected for the risks he is willing to take for his fellow man.

6 The Realism

You may not have noticed, but the realism of the characters and the show is outstanding. The main characters act as though they are actually in a real hospital, even though the series is not a reality TV series. There is this aura of realism that surrounds the series and the characters do a lot to make this a reality.

The supporting characters also put in their quota; the patients are sometimes challenging, which is typical of an actual hospital setting. So in case you’ve been wondering why this particular TV series seems so different from the rest (and why you love it so much), it’s because it aims at accurate depiction rather than a fictional plot.

5 Nicolette Nevin Is Overqualified For Her Position

Although Nicolette, played by Emily Van Champ, does an excellent job in her position as a nurse practitioner running one of the hospital floors, she is overqualified for it. Apart from her on-and-off relationship with Conrad Hawkins (which should be inappropriate due to workplace policy), she shines in other ways in the show. She is a fan favorite, being the main love interest of the show. We see Nic get in trouble with Dr. Lane Hunter for her quick wit and suspicious eyes. She became a threat to her. Even Conrad wasn’t able to spot the incongruencies at first, but Nic did. Perhaps she would do a better job than Conrad Hawkins, but, we’ll never know.

4 Dr. Lane Hunter Was Close To Conrad

Dr. Lane Hunter was the top oncologist at Chastain Park Memorial played by Melina Kanakaredes. Although she is later portrayed to be the ruthless and cold-blooded person she is, that does not erase the history she had with Conrad. She was Conrad’s mentor in the past. Not much is revealed about their relationship, but you could see traces of her personality in Conrad’s. She is no doubt a brilliant doctor just like Conrad. However, the only thing that differentiates her from the rebellious Conrad is that she is the bad guy who treats her patients poorly for financial gains while Conrad is the good guy who breaks the rules to save his.

3 Conrad Hawkins Can Be Super Manipulative

Conrad Hawkins can be quite the manipulator. You may not have picked up on this but in the episode “Independence Day” from season one, we see him use his Machiavellian side on Noni Turner to get a heart transplant for his patient. Perhaps you waived it off as a one-time occurrence, however, we see him do this again. In season two he manipulates Dr. Pravesh. Although he does this to preserve the life of his patients, it is still breaking the rules using manipulative means. He has shown that he will do whatever it takes, and through whichever means to get his way, even if he has to use unscrupulous methods.

2 Dr. Minna Okafor Is Broken Romantically

Dr. Minna Okafor is played by Shaunette Renee Wilson. Like most people, she has her history. The show does a good job of portraying her character, but this character also indicates she has been hurt in the past (romantically), perhaps more than most. You could tell it ran deeper when she told Micah Stevens he was up to get his brand new heart broken when he made romantic advances toward her. It becomes even clearer that she was bent on sticking to her decision when she refused to be moved even after having sexual intercourse with him. After his life-threatening incident and the operation – which was mostly as a result of their lovemaking – we see a tearful Minna by Micah’s bedside.

1 Catherine Was Conrad’s Fiancé

Conrad Hawkins had a love interest before Nic. In season one, episode seven, we see Conrad try to avoid anything that would lead to a conversation about his past with her. However, Nic suspected something was afoot and questioned his proximity to Catherine. Conrad had ended his relationship with Catherine on the basis that the relationship would not work. However, the young doctor just wasn’t willing to continue. Conrad and Nic have come a long way and even gotten engaged in season three, but we cannot be too sure of what the future holds as regards to Catherine who might still be in love with the doctor.
