Jeff Lemire, the creator of Sweet Tooth, will bring readers a puzzling new world in Mazebook, a five-issue miniseries debuting this September from Dark Horse Comics. The story of a grieving father trying to reunite with his deceased daughter, the book is the latest in a string of winning creator-owned titles from Lemire, following up on Snow Angels.
One of the most acclaimed creators working in comics today, Jeff Lemire has been the driving force behind award-winning creator-owned titles such as Essex County, Sweet Tooth, Descender, Black Hammer, and Snow Angels. Sweet Tooth was recently adapted into a highly-praised Netflix show. In addition to his creator-owned work, Lemire has worked for Marvel, DC, and Valiant, having written characters as diverse as Moon Knight, Animal Man, and Bloodshot. Lemire has won several industry awards, including the Eisners, and is a New York Times best-selling author, and now this September, Jeff Lemire teams up with Dark Horse Comics to bring readers his latest, Mazebook, which promises to be one of his most challenging works yet.
Described in a press release from Dark Horse as “ambitious” and “haunting,” the book will explore the concepts of grief and family. The series’ protagonist, a building inspector still mourning the loss of his daughter, receives a phone call from someone claiming to be her, trapped in a mysterious, otherworldly labyrinth. His daughter had been a fan of puzzles and mazes and using an unfinished maze in her journal as a clue, he begins an odyssey to find her, one that will take him to other planes of existence. The press release also featured two covers spotlighting Lemire’s art.
Over the last fifteen years, Jeff Lemire has created a distinguished body of work, both in the creator-owned and work-for-hire realms. Lemire is just as adept at chronicling Wolverine’s adventures or exploring the psychology of Moon Knight as he is creating realistic, slice-of-life stories such as the type seen in Essex County. Mazebook looks to combine personal storytelling with a high-concept adventure, and fellow creators James Tynion IV and Matt Kindt had praise for the title, with both creators agreeing it was one of Lemire’s best works to date, with Tynion calling Lemire a “living master.”
Tynion is correct—Lemire is a modern master, having created the popular Sweet Tooth as well as distinguished runs on some of comics’ most popular characters, and now he is set to keep his winning streak going with Mazebook, on sale in print and digital September 8 from Dark Horse Comics.
