Why Twilight Princess Made Link Right-Handed | Screen Rant

Link has long been one of gaming's most iconic characters, and prior to The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, he was a notable southpaw - his left hand was his dominant one. Ever since his 3D debut in Ocarina of Time, Link carried his sword and used his various items primarily with his left hand. This is no longer the case, however, since the most recent depiction of Link in Breath of the Wild and its sequel is right-handed. The change came about when Twilight Princess released on the Wii, and Nintendo had to take into consideration the way motion controls would mimic the game.

A majority of the global population is right-handed, and as such, most Wii players would hold the Wii Remote in their right hand. This was a problem for the design team, since swinging a sword might feel weird to players holding the Wii Remote with their right if it corresponded to Link's left. The solution was was to switch the hand with which Link used his sword. Simply transitioning the sword to Link's other hand wasn't the end of the situation, though, and the entirety of Twilight Princess was flipped as a result.

Twilight Princess launched cross-generationally on both the Wii and GameCube. The GameCube version of the game still has a traditionally left-handed Link, along with an oppositely-oriented game world. East on the Wii is west on the GameCube, and vice versa. This change most likely came relatively late in development, since according to IGNZelda producer Shigeru Miyamoto noticed more people holding the Wii Remote in their right hand at an E3 play test. Instead of creating a second Link for the Wii version, potentially having to redo animations and cutscenes, Nintendo just mirrored the whole game instead.

The GameCube version of Twilight Princess Link is generally considered the canon version of the game for two reasons: Link retains his previously established left-handedness, and the Twilight Princess HD version of the game for the Wii U is a remaster of the GameCube's Twilight Princess. However, the following two 3D incarnations of Link - in Skyward Sword and Breath of the Wild - are right-handed. Looking at the issue historically doesn't really give a clear answer either.

In the original The Legend of Zelda, Link's sprite wields his sword mostly in the left hand, except when the sprite is mirrored to face east, in which case he uses his right. The original instruction manual for The Legend of Zelda doesn't give a definitive answer, and most of the illustrations of Link show him holding his sword right-handed, generally the opposite of the in-game sprite. However, there are a couple images in the manual of Link holding the sword in his left hand, adding to the confusion.

The manual for Zelda II is more clear, stating Link set off on his journey "with a magical sword in his left hand and a magical shield in his right." Yet the game itself has the same sprite mirroring confusion of its predecessor, meaning Link uses a different hand dependent on which way he's facing. This trend would continue through the dungeon-heavy A Link to the Past as well, likely a technical limitation of older hardware's more limited memory, and it wasn't until Link's Awakening that the sprite was left-handed regardless of direction faced.

Link's more common left-handedness if often attributed to Shigeru Miyamoto himself being left-handed, but according to a Kotaku interview from 2014, Miyamoto is actually ambidextrous. Perhaps the most convenient answer, as is the case with many Zelda-related queries, is that Zelda's convoluted timeline allows for both right- and left-handed Link to be canon. The two different Links of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess are strangely emblematic of the first few depictions of Link, where a definitive answer to his handedness was nowhere to be found.
