Eternals Teaser Trailer Proves The World Knows Sam Wilson Is Captain America

The Eternals trailer proves the world knows Sam Wilson is the new Captain America. Avengers: Endgame marked the grand finale of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Infinity Saga, but in addition to wrapping up a decade's worth of character arcs and storylines, it also looked to set up the franchise's future. One of the biggest moments in the film came towards the end, when an elderly Steve Rogers passed the Captain America shield to Sam Wilson, who had fought alongside Steve as Falcon. Sam was Steve's handpicked successor to carry the mantle.

Of course, this was a primary focus in Marvel's The Falcon and the Winter Soldier series. Initially, Sam turned down the opportunity to be the next Captain America, but by the show's end he had fully embraced the role - complete with a new costume from Wakanda. Sam is now firmly cemented as the MCU's Captain America moving forward, and it's a detail Marvel is extremely aware of as they market their upcoming projects.

Marvel released the first Eternals trailer, which ends with a scene of Sprite asking who will lead the Avengers now that "Captain Rogers" and Iron Man are both gone. The stinger is included to end the trailer on a humorous note, but it's significant because it draws a distinction between Steve Rogers and Captain America.

It's telling Sprite inquires about Steve and not Captain America. The moment illustrates the Eternals (like the rest of the world post-Endgame) are aware Steve is no longer in action. They officially recognize Sam as the new Captain America, but it would appear they're unsure if he can lead the Avengers moving forward. This may be elaborated upon in the movie, but perhaps the Eternals have knowledge of Steve's heroic exploits in the MCU (dating back to World War II) and are waiting to see more from Sam before they're convinced in can lead the team. An argument can be made that's unfair to Sam, but it serves as a foundation for his arc moving forward. He's transitioning from supporting character to a lead (Captain America 4 with Anthony Mackie is reportedly in development) and he might even have questions about his new role.

It'll be interesting to see how Marvel handles this moving forward. There are no more Avengers movies on the immediate horizon as the studio progresses through Phase 4, but it's only a matter of time before Earth's Mightiest unite again to take on a massive threat. At that point, the team will look very different when compared to Endgame; half of the Original Six are already gone in the current MCU timeline. There's no shortage of characters for Marvel to choose from as they put together the next team, and who leads it will work itself out over time. Sam, carrying on Steve's legacy, would certainly be a deserving leader - even if he's fighting alongside some of the Eternals.
