World Of Warcraft Classic Suffers DDoS Attack On Burning Crusade Launch

During the launch of the new Burning Crusade expansion, World of Warcraft Classic has been hit with a DDoS attack which may interrupt service for players. The expansion has been a hotly anticipated addition to WoW Classic for some time; nostalgic fans have been eager to relive their adventures in the old days of World of Warcraft. Some fans have also likely been looking forward to the difficulty increase that Burning Crusade will likely bring, including the addition of new Heroic Dungeons and a significant change to the meta of the game concerning World Buffs.

One exciting factor of Burning Crusade has been the developers' philosophy of making "some changes" to the experience, setting it apart from its 2007 release. This is in stark contrast to the "No Changes" philosophy of World of Warcraft Classic itself, which aimed to provide an experience as close to the original MMORPG as possible in order to maximize nostalgia. Unfortunately, modern gaming sensibilities and more readily available knowledge made the game much easier than fans remembered from its initial launch, which disappointed some gamers who wanted a more daunting journey down memory lane. Blizzard's more open-minded design philosophy for Burning Crusade is likely to make for a more interesting and difficult experience.

Unfortunately, some fans may have to wait a bit longer to see what these changes are. Blizzard has announced via the Warcraft Devs Twitter account stating that the game has been hit with a DDoS attack. The team has warned that this attack may result in higher latency and disconnections for players trying to enjoy the new expansion. The team has promised that it is actively working to address the issue, but as of the time of this writing, no new information has been given.

DDoS attacks occur when someone attempts to disrupt an online service by flooding it with superfluous requests and tasks. They're unfortunately common in the online gaming environment; in March, an upset fan successfully carried one out on LittleBigPlanet's online servers. The increase in traffic which usually follows a major release like Burning Crusade likely isn't helping WoW's servers run any smoother, and will quite possibly result in increased difficulties for players.

Hopefully Blizzard can address these issues soon and provide its fans the vintage World of Warcraft experience they've been waiting for. The gaming community is rife with cheaters and hackers, constantly looking for ways to make the gaming experience worse for everyone else. For every one of these unsavory characters who are apprehended, more are lurking in the shadows, waiting for their chance. It remains to be seen how swiftly Blizzard will purge them from World of Warcraft.
