Potential spoilers for Beta Ray Bill #1 ahead!
The King in Black is coming for Asgard, and in a preview for Beta Ray Bill #1, the fan-favorite former Thor rallies the forces for battle. The issue is written and drawn by Daniel Warren Johnson with colors by Mike Spicer.
Legendary artist Walt Simonson took over Thor in 1983 and inaugurated his run by creating Beta Ray Bill, a member of the Korbinite race who is worthy enough to lift Thor’s enchanted hammer Mjolnir. No one else had been able to do so during the character’s early existence, so Bill’s ability to do so came as a great surprise and made an impression on readers. From there, he would become a mainstay of Marvel Universe's cosmic side. Beta Ray Bill even joined the Guardians of the Galaxy at one point. He has proven so popular that he even made the jump to other mediums, appearing in animation as well as “blink and you miss it” cameo in Thor: Ragnarok. Now this fan-favorite is ready to lead the forces of Asgard in the battle against Knull, the King in Black.
In a preview for Beta Ray Bill #1 from writer and artist Daniel Warren Johnson and colorist Mike Spicer, Beta Ray Bill stands in an Asgardian armory, reflecting back to a moment in his childhood on his homeworld. A great threat, a “fire” was coming, and a young Beta Ray Bill was chosen as a champion for his people. He thinks back to his first meeting with Thor as well. Then, back in the present, Lady Sif comes to him, warning him that the King in Black draws near. There is no sign of Thor, so Beta Ray Bill realizes it is up to him to take charge of Asgard’s armies and lead them against this dark threat; at the base of the World Tree, Beta Ray Bill raises his enchanted ax Stormbreaker and rallies the troops, receiving thunderous applause.
The preview ends there, so readers do not get to see the battle’s outcome, but judging from both Beta Ray Bill and the rest of the army, the battle will be fierce—just like an Asgardian battle should be. Though given how the rest of Marvel's heroes have been faring against Knull's forces, fans have more than enough reason to worry about the fate of Asgard.
When Beta Ray Bill first appeared, fans were shocked that there was another being worthy enough to lift Thor’s hammer, that there could be another who would command the respect of Odin and all of Asgard, but Beta Ray Bill was just the one to do it. To this day, the Asgardians respect Bill, enough to follow him into glorious battle against the King in Black. Look for Beta Ray Bill #1 when it launches from Marvel Comics on March 31st.
