The X-Men's Cyclops Broke One Surprising Mutant's Heart

The X-Men's Cyclops broke one surprising mutant's heart. Modern X-Men fans tend to think of Cyclops as a pretty dull, by-the-books figure. This perception is predominantly influenced by the enduring popularity of the classic X-Men: The Animated Series, and it was cemented in place in Fox's X-Men movies. But over time, Cyclops has played the role of a heartbreaker, and in Frenzy's case, he totally for their tragic romance.

It's easy to forget that Cyclops is actually supposed to be an incredibly charismatic leader. He is meant to be the kind of guy you simply can't help following, with a forceful personality and a strategic brilliance that ensures you won't regret it; that's why he's the X-Men's greatest leader. This charisma also manifests in the fact he seems to be unusually attractive to members of the opposite sex (particularly to telepaths; even Psylocke found him irresistible). But the most surprising mutant to have her heart broken by Scott Summers was actually a long-standing member of Magneto's Acolytes.

Frenzy is a mutant powerhouse, whose strength, speed, agility, and endurance are all well beyond peak athlete. She grew up as a victim of abuse, and when her powers first manifested she unwittingly killed her abusive father in an act of self-defense. Frenzy became a mercenary for a time, but she loved the thrill of combat, and her bloodlust ultimately led her to the Acolytes. It was there that she first met Cyclops, and he impressed her greatly when he led a group of Acolyte survivors across the Australian outback, refusing to let any of them die. Years later, Frenzy was one of the mutants who settled in San Francisco, living under Cyclops' leadership.

And then Charles Xavier's son Legion used his reality-warping powers to create a false reality known as the "Age of X." This dystopian timeline was one in which the mutant race was struggling to survive, and in this alternative world Frenzy and Cyclops were lovers. When reality was restored, Frenzy was one of the few mutants who chose to retain her memories of the "Age of X." In spite of the horrific circumstances, she had known a degree of peace and acceptance among fellow mutants that she had never experienced before, and she didn't want to forget that.

It seems Frenzy never got over Cyclops. In SWORD #4, she goes up against Kid Cable, who has been possessed by Knull, the god of the symbiotes. A furious Knull threatens an act of terrible revenge; "I'll make you kill everyone you've ever loved," he tells her. "Beat your own children to death--" Frenzy is unimpressed, interrupting him to continue the beat-down. "I've only ever loved one person," she responds. "And if he'd felt the same, you'd be my stepson. So this must feel like a win." As badass as the scene may be, it's hard not to feel sorry for Frenzy, the lover Cyclops has forgotten he ever had, and yet who will always remember their time together.
