Grey's Anatomy: 10 Hidden Details About Emerald City Bar

Located right across Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, The Emerald City Bar, also known as Joe's Bar, has distinguished itself as the favorite hangout joint for the gifted hands of Greys Anatomy. Appearing in nearly all seasons, the bar is said to have been in operation for 15 years. In the series, it's also the most popular bar in Seattle.

Most of the main characters routinely pass by the bar after work to unwind. It's also a place where love has also been brewed as a couple of lovebirds have met or gone on dates there. The firefighters of SFD Station 19 who interact with the doctors on a regular basis are also known to frequent Joe's bar.

10 Two Of The Doctors Have Worked At The Bar

Alex Karev and Cristina Yang have both briefly served as employees of the bar. Alex takes up some shifts at the bar right after the ferry accident victim and one his favorite patients Rebecca Pope is brought back to Seattle Grace.

In season seven, Cristina also works as a bartender at Emerald City Bar. When Derek gets the grant needed for his clinical trial, the rest of the doctors take him to the bar to celebrate. Derek then notices that Cristina is bartending. When he asks why, she says it's because Owen asked her to get a job to keep herself busy after she quit her job at the hospital. Joe later fires her for incompetence.

9 Meredith First Meets Derek At The Bar

It happened a long time ago but Meredith and Derek's whirlwind romance is still fresh in the minds of fans. Who can forget "choose me, pick me?" Given the numerous couples that have been on the show, its easy to forget where each met. As star doctors, one can assume that Meredith and Derek met at the hospital.

Well, they actually met at Joe's. A flashback scene in Season 3's "Time Has Come Today" shows Derek checking out Meredith as she asks Joe for a straight tequila. He quickly joins her and orders scotch for himself. She ignores him at first but he persists and they eventually warm up to each other.

8 The Reason Joe Opened The Bar

Joe's decision to open Emerald City is tied to his long-time rivalry with Larry, the owner of Seattle's The Dead Baby Bar. Joe and Larry's mother were always competing against each other and often used their sons as pawns. This led to the two young boys hating each other and trying to outdo each other in life.

In preschool, they competed in making the best finger painting. At the age of 9, they fought for the title of Fasted Lego Castle Maker. In high school, they tried to beat each other to prom dates. As adults, they wanted to find out who would run the better bar in Seattle. Joe pretty much emerged the winner.

7 Only The Names Of Three Other Employees Have Been Revealed

Apart from Cristina, Alex, and the owner Joe, there are only three other named employees of the bar in the medical drama. These are Trey, Mark, and Chance.

Mark's name is revealed the night April gets so drunk that she sleeps at the bar. Mark lets her sleep but wakes her up in the morning because he has to close the place. He also serves coffee to Meredith and David as they hide from reporters before their presentation. Trey and Chance have also been called by name by the revelers a couple of times.

6 The Bar's Address

The address of the bar has once been revealed as 4397 Northeast Sequoia Avenue. During the early scenes, the bar scenes were filmed at the former McMurphy's Restaurant & Tavern. The bar later became the Der Wolfskopf gastropub.

A set replica of the Emerald City Bar was then built. The most recent scenes have been filmed inside the replica. One can see the difference in the design of the bar between the early seasons and the later ones.

5 Joe Documents What Happens In The Bar

Joe happens to be a blogger too who documents what happens in the bar. This is revealed in Overheard At The Emerald City Bar, a 2006 tie-in novel penned by Chris Van Dusen. It was released with another novel Notes from the Nurses' Station.

The novel combines blog post stories written by Joe and IM chats between him (Username: JoeKnowsBest) and Nurse Debbie (Username: DebbieDoesGossip). The IM chats include stories that Joe overheard, like George sleeping with Meredith and Meredith being in a dilemma about Finn and Derek.

4 Burke Is The Only Doctor To Hold His Bachelor Party There

Burke is never quite sure about his wedding, and that explains why he decides to hold his bachelor party there. When he asks Derek to be his best man, Derek is a bit reluctant. He knows Burke's mind is divided. So does Richard who tells Burke that he felt the same way until he saw Adele coming down the aisle.

Derek finally has some relief about being the best man when Burke tells him he only has to organize a bachelor party at the Emerald City Bar. Well, as good as Joe's bar is, Burke could have at least chosen Vegas.

3 The Skeleton

It's a detail that's easy for viewers who solely focus on the dialogue to miss. There's a skeleton that's always present at the bar. The skeleton is named Dr. Bones.

Bones is a decoration meant to honor the numerous doctors who frequent the bar after saving lives. The skeleton is tied together using a string of white Christmas lights. It also has a sign that reads "Dr. Bones on call!"

2 The Time The Bar Almost Closes

Despite being the most visited bar in Seattle, the Emerald City Bar has had its rough times. Joe almost loses the bar due to medical costs when he collapses one day.

Luckily, George saves him by finding a loophole in the hospital's billing system. People who pledge to donate their bodies to science once they are dead aren't charged for surgeries. Since Joe would be briefly dead during the surgery, he won't be charged a cent. This works and Joe gets to keep the bar.

1 Joe Has Been Missing Lately

Joe hasn't been seen in the bar for the past few seasons. No explanation has been given for this. One theory is that he sold the bar and decided to move on to other things.

A more plausible theory is that he handed over management to someone else so that he could focus on raising his family. During one camping trip in the earlier seasons, Joe mentions that his partner Walter complains about raising the kids alone. Given this statement, he possibly makes the decision to help Walter out by focusing less on the bar.
