Wonder Woman's New Series Could Save Infinite Frontier's Worst Twist

Warning: spoilers ahead for Dark Nights: Death Metal and Wonder Woman #770!

Wonder Woman's new series could save Infinite Frontier's worst plot twist. The character's first issue in DC Comics' new initiative may have potentially undone her sacrifice in Dark Nights: Death Metal by having her turn down a major new role. However, Wonder Woman #770 may fix that twist for the better, depending on the journey she takes.

Dark Nights: Death Metal was one of the last big events that help set up the future continuity of the DC universe. It ended with Wonder Woman facing down the Batman Who Laughs and saving the Multiverse. As a result, she was offered the chance to transcend mortality and join the Quintessence - a group of six neutral, god-like observers of the Multiverse. Though already a god, Diana was set for the biggest promotion possible. And this offer of ascension to help the Hands guide the future of the DC universe led into the start of DC's newest continuity update

Infinite Frontier #1 revealed that Wonder Woman turned down ascension. Afterward, she seemed to be ready to return to Earth. Since the role of ascension was so different from her usual one, it seemed to be an exciting change for the character and the decision to turn it down initially came across as a disappointment. However, Wonder Woman #770 shows that turning ascension down may lead to a whole new journey for Wonder Woman, even though rejecting godhood seems like a poor decision for DC to have made for the character.

Wonder Woman has woken up in Asgard and while this seems strange, it may be exactly what was needed after the initial disappointment. The Return of Superman following The Death of Superman seemed to cheapen the weight of superhero deaths. After all, it proved that heroes could come back from death very easily, with relatively minor consequences. DC almost seemed to be going the same route with Wonder Woman this time. She ended Dark Nights: Death Metal by sacrificing herself and a speedy return to Earth would severely cheapen the weight of her decision.

Instead, Wonder Woman may have a longer road ahead of her that will hopefully make all of the sacrifices - and even the declined ascension - worthwhile. Wonder Woman #770 is captioned "A NEW ODYSSEY STARTS HERE." If this is in fact an odyssey, where Diana has to work her way back home through intense trials and challenges, it could be the payoff fans are now looking for. Diana has already proven to be a skilled leader, an inspiring hero, and a staple of the DC trinity. This new story needs to live up to the legacy she has created in the past few events and give Wonder Woman the chance to pay off fans' interest and continued support
