Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart seems to be the latest success for developer Insomniac Games, with critics and fans alike giving the new entry in the Ratchet & Clank series high praise. One of the elements that is being praised in Rift Apart is the introduction of new female protagonist Rivet, a fellow Lombax like Ratchet that hails from an alternate dimension. Players learn much about Rivet throughout the course of the game, with one of the more surprising discoveries being about how she lost her arm.
[Warning: Spoilers for Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart below]
Rivet makes her appearance in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart very early in the game, with Ratchet and Clank being transported to her dimension after Dr. Nefarious destroys the Dimensionator, a device that allows the user to open rifts into other dimensions. Clank winds up with Rivet, who finds the tiny robot injured and separated from his partner after their run-in with Dr. Nefarious. The two escape the planet with Ratchet following close behind, and the remainder of the game follows the group's attempts to repair the Dimensionator and stop the Dimensional Cataclysm.
Along the way, the group gathers a fourth member in the form of KIT, a robot in Rivet's dimension who Ratchet encounters while trying to find a Dimensional Map. KIT warns Ratchet that she was built by Emperor Nefarious to be a Warbot in his army and could potentially lose control of her programming, but Ratchet reassures her that things will be okay and the two join forces. KIT and Rivet eventually become a pair later on in the story, but the new partnership grows tense once Rivet explains how she lost her arm.

During a conversation with KIT later in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Rivet reveals that she lost her arm during an encounter with one of Emperor Nefarious' Warbots. Through flashback, Rivet explains that she was attempting to break into Nefarious' facilities to try and put an end to his reign, but the Warbot caught Rivet in the act and tried to destroy her. However, the Warbot was unsuccessful, taking Rivet's arm instead and allowing her to escape with her life. Once safe, Rivet was able to craft a metal arm to replace her missing appendage, which is the arm that she has throughout the course of the game.
While this seems like a fairly straightforward explanation from new character Rivet, there is an extra layer to the story that she does not realize concerning KIT. While listening to Rivet's tale, KIT realizes that she was the Warbot responsible for taking Rivet's arm, and she attempts to hide her past from Rivet to conserve their new friendship. Eventually, Rivet learns about KIT's former past when she shifts into her much larger and destructive form to protect Rivet from danger, causing Rivet to recoil in fear as she recognizes KIT as the Warbot who attacked her.
Consumed with guilt and believing that Rivet will never forgive her, KIT refuses to join the rest of the crew in the climactic battle against Emperor Nefarious. This strained relationship weighs on Rivet as well, with her and Clank sharing a conversation about how Rivet should forgive KIT for the actions that she clearly regrets. The final battle in Megalopolis commences, and right before Rivet is about to take on an army of warbots alone, KIT drops from the sky to help her friend after coming to terms with her past transgressions. KIT and Rivet fight together to help Ratchet and Clank defeat Emperor Nefarious and his troops, and the ending of Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart leaves Rivet and KIT reconciling their friendship, paving the way for Insomniac to include the new pair in potential future adventures.
