The film Her was a critical and commercial success at the time of its release with writer-director Spike Jonze winning the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay as well as the Golden Globe Award.
Indeed, with Joaquin Phoenix's performance and such gorgeous cinematography among other things, it was inevitable that the movie would become a hit. Fortunately for many fans, what made this sci-fi movie worthy of a watch was primarily its dramatic elements which are also present in other great sci-fi features.

8 2046 (2004)
A movie that concludes Wong Kar-wai's trilogy of Days of Being Wild and In the Mood for Love, 2046 focuses more on its dramatic rather than science-fiction elements.
Following the story that was laid out in the first two movies, 2046 depicts the aftermath of the lead character's breakup with the love of his life as he goes through several affairs.
7 Gravity (2013)
Arguably Sandra Bullock's best role, Gravity was a massive critical and commercial success receiving ten Academy Award nominations and winning seven of them including Best Director for Alfonso CuarĂłn.
Set entirely in space save for the final scenes, it follows two American astronauts who get stranded on the Earth's orbit after their space shuttle is destroyed.
6 Ex Machina (2014)
A breakout performance for Alicia Vikander, Ex Machina also helped kickstart the career of the first-time director Alex Garland who had been previously known for his novels and screenplays. Made on a relatively small budget, it was praised for its realistic CGI and even received the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects along with a nomination for Garland's screenplay.
The story follows a programmer who wins an opportunity to spend a week with the CEO of a company he is working for. Upon arrival at the CEO's isolated house, he learns that he will have to run the Turing test on an AI-powered humanoid robot.
5 Mr. Nobody (2009)
Sometimes named one of the most recent cult films, Mr. Nobody received positive reviews upon its release and won several awards. Starring Jared Leto in the lead role, it has been praised for its cinematography, soundtrack, characters, and philosophical themes.
The story begins in the future where a 118-year-old man named Nemo Nobody is the oldest mortal on the planet. When asked about his life, Nemo starts recounting it way back from the way his parents met but keeps on alternating between the different possibilities of the way his life could have gone.
4 Arrival (2016)
Denis Villeneuve's Arrival was a huge success at the time of its release and earned eight Academy Award nominations including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Amy Adams also received the Golden Globe for Best Actress nomination while the late Johann Johannsson was nominated for his score.
Based on a 1998 short story, it follows a linguist tasked by the US Army to find a way to understand and communicate with the aliens that have arrived on Earth in their enormous spaceships.
3 Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (2004)
One of the best films in both Kate Winslet's and Jim Carrey's careers, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was written by the acclaimed Charlie Kaufman who would go on to direct movies of his own and won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for the movie.
The story follows a couple who decided to erase memories of each other, but as the movie has a non-linear structure, the viewers get to see the couple's relationship play out from the beginning.
2 The Prestige (2006)
Starring Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale, The Prestige is another movie notorious for its complicated non-linear structure.
Based on the novel of the same name, it depicts the rivalry between two 19th-century magicians as they each try to create tricks that will both stun the audience and outdo what they had done before or what their rivals are doing.
1 Interstellar (2014)
Another one of Christopher Nolan's creations, Interstellar is by far one of the greatest space movies ever made. With its dramatic yet action-filled plot, it was a massive critical and commercial success with audiences loving it just as much.
The story takes place in a dystopian future where humanity is on the brink of starvation. Unable to find a solution that could save the crops, scientists decide to send a group of astronauts to find another planet that could become a new home for humankind.
