5 Animal Crossing Islanders Who Could Secretly Be Supervillains (& 5 Who Could Be Heroes)

There are hundreds of islanders for players to meet in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and most players have their own favorites and least favorites based on looks, personality, and even the theming of their homes. With the game being almost a year old, though, many players may not have visited their islands in quite some time, which begs the question, what have the islanders been up to?

It's fun to fantasize about exactly what each islander would spend their time doing when the players are away, and one of the more outlandish possibilities out there is that some of the villagers may be harboring secret identities as superheroes and supervillains. While there are a few outright superhero villagers, like Agent S and Big Top, these Animal Crossing villagers seem to have the tools and talents to harbor super-secret identities.

10 Ankha - Villain

The most legendary supervillains tend to have a strong gimmick, and Ankha certainly has that in spades. This snooty cat neighbor is done up in her pharaoh finery 24/7, looking like Egyptian royalty and decorating her house to match, complete with hieroglyphs on the walls and a huge pyramid in the center of her living room.

As a snooty islander, Ankha is very concerned with appearances, and so it is easy to see her as a cartoonish mastermind who wants to rebuild the world in her idealized image full of Ancient Egyptian iconography. Whether this image is innocent or secretly evil, though, it's hard not to admire Ankha's dedication to this cool, ornate style.

9 Boomer - Hero

From Wonder Woman to Captain Marvel, pilots-as-superheroes are very common figures in superhero stories. So, it follows that Boomer, a lazy penguin villager who enjoys wearing flight goggles and a pilot's jacket, may just be hiding a secret heroic alter ego behind his huggable appearance.

In New Horizons, Boomer's home is also decorated to look like an Arctic wonderland, perhaps concealing a secret ice-cave somewhere within its walls. As a lazy villager, it might be a little much to ask of Boomer to juggle both being a superhero and living a normal island life, but the signs are still there that this flying penguin might harbor super-heroic tendencies.

8 Ribbot - Villain

The unique jock frog villager Ribbot is probably one of the more sought-after villagers across the Animal Crossing series due to his robotic appearance adding some variety to the games' cute animal aesthetic. However, Ribbot's metal visage could be hiding something sinister underneath.

In New Horizons, Ribbot's house is a robotics workshop, which makes sense as a home for a mechanical frog, but also offers the perfect opportunity for his potential turn against animal- and humankind. Although he is not the only robotic villager in the games, Ribbot's wide eyes do seem to hold the most secrets, perhaps a super-villainous one.

7 Goldie - Hero

Named after the golden retriever, one of the purest symbols of dogs' loyalty, Goldie is a normal dog villager whom any player would be happy to have as a neighbor. The aesthetic of her home and dress is very warm and inviting, reflecting her nice and easy personality that's never overwhelming in its positivity.

Even though she doesn't necessarily have the qualities of a typical dynamic action hero, Goldie has the perfect positive, approachable demeanor and aesthetic to be a superhero. Maybe she's hiding some serious skills underneath those adorable puppy dog eyes.

6 Elvis - Villain

With a perpetually angry visage and regal robes, cranky lion villager Elvis is certainly an intimidating figure, an effect that is only enhanced by his kingly home décor. With a house featuring a throne-like couch and such luxuries as an ornate harp and marble column wallpaper, Elvis' kingly aesthetic screams evil rich guy.

While Elvis' decadent room design might be devoid of evil intent, it's easy to imagine him allowing his royal tastes to go to his head a little. Even if he isn't already a secret supervillain, perhaps Elvis should consider it, as he already has a dazzling evil lair worthy of the coolest bad guys.

5 Ken - Hero

Ken the smug chicken is one of many islanders in the game to embrace a martial arts theme in their dress, dĂ©cor, and demeanor. With an outfit modeled after a ninja and a home that shows off his love of Japanese culture, Ken certainly has taken the style and manner of a warrior of the shadows to heart.

With a smug personality, Ken is on the perfect trajectory to becoming a superhero, as his kindness is sometimes overshadowed by his inflated sense of self, a vulnerability shared by many iconic heroes of fiction. Also, it's very fun to picture Ken sneaking around at night, seeking out and stopping crime wherever he finds it.

4 Cobb - Villain

Maybe its unfair to cast Cobb the jock pig as a villain just because of his interest in science, but he has certainly cultivated a mad scientist aesthetic for himself that lends a certain eeriness to his presence. His interest in science borders on obsession, as his home is filled with papers and books, leaving no room for a real bed.

Maybe Cobb just enjoys sleeping in his sleeping bag, or maybe whenever he's alone, he's plotting his next morally questionable experiment, using the remoteness of the island as a way to escape the norms of society. This fantasy is broken a little, though, by the fact that his catchphrase is, adorably, "hot dog."

3 Knox - Hero

Dressed as a medieval knight, Knox is a cranky chicken islander who looks exactly like the kind of animal that moonlights as a virtuous superhero. His cranky personality may be a sign that his virtues and ideals are strongly held, which is a great trait for a hero to have.

His house is decorated like a medieval tomb, as well, showing that he already has his superhero gimmick firmly in place from his wardrobe to his headquarters. Plus, if his investment in the knight aesthetic has extended to combat training, then he even has the skills to fight crime already.

2 Barold - Villain

At face value, there doesn't seem to be anything threatening or intimidating about Barold, the lazy cub islander whose name is an adorable portmanteau of "bear" and "Harold." However, a look at Barold's home reveals something a little disturbing: an office-like layout with walls full of security camera monitors.

It's one thing to be invested in one's work, but Barold's obsession with security is sure to raise some red flags with players. It's certainly the kind of setup one might see in a villain's lair, and while Barold may be a lazy islander, that doesn't mean he can't get up to some computerized mischief from the comfort of his high-security home.

1 Phoebe - Hero

What better inspiration for a superhero than the majestic phoenix, risen from the ashes? The sisterly ostrich islander Phoebe will bring a kind heart and a fiery sense of style to any player's island, creating the perfect recipe for rumors of a new local superhero to spring up among neighbors.

Although her fashion is more casual, Phoebe clearly has an affinity for the fiery, as her home is decorated in lava walls and floors, suggesting a volcanic hideout for a flame-spitting superheroine. Her catchphrase, "sparky," might even be a pithy name for her superpowered alter ego who would probably use fire to fight crime (and look cool doing it).
