Agatha Is Just Like Doctor Strange 2's Villain (But He Would Kill Her)

The opening of WandaVision episode 8 shed light on Agatha Harkness' backstory and motivations, making her surprisingly similar to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness villain Mordo - except that he would want to kill her. Agatha's origin dates back to the Salem Witch Trials in 1693, where she stole power from the other witches in her coven. Having honed her witchcraft for centuries, Agatha is aghast to find that Wanda Maximoff has powers that can outstrip her own without any such training.

Karl Mordo, meanwhile, was an ally to Doctor Strange throughout the Sorcerer Supreme's first film. But when Strange defies the laws of nature in order to defeat Dormammu, Mordo becomes disillusioned with his fellow Masters of the Mystic Arts and vows to cleanse the world of other magic-users. This project would place him in direct conflict with Agatha, despite the intriguing similarities between the two characters.

While Mordo and all others who trained under the Ancient One practice a light-based magic known as Eldritch Magic, Agatha is adept in a form of dark magic, although the exact nature of her magic in the MCU remains murky. She is obsessed with Wanda's ability to harness Chaos Magic, of which even Wanda herself is yet to recognize the potential. Like Mordo, Agatha envies those who are able to harness such powerful magic despite putting in little to no practice. Mordo quickly comes to resent Doctor Strange for this very reason, and he eventually becomes intent upon eliminating all other sorcerers,. Agatha actually wants to help Wanda realize her potential, albeit for selfish reasons - seemingly to harness it for herself - but has similarly gone to great lengths to achieve her goal.

While there are currently no concrete plans for the MCU to bring Mordo and Agatha into contact with one another, their paths may still be consequentially intertwined. There is reason to believe that Agatha draws her magic from the Dark Dimension, which would suggest a close relationship between her and Dormammu. She may not be serving the inter-dimensional ruler like Kaecilius and the Zealots from Doctor Strange, but she could still be invoking Dormammu's power in order to maintain her own.  Of course, such use of magic would not fly with Mordo, who deems the use of magic for personal gain as rogue and impure, as evidenced by his attack on Jonathan Pangborn at the end of Doctor Strange.

As Wanda develops her own magical abilities and begins to embrace the Scarlet Witch mantle, she and Agatha may draw further unwanted attention to the Westview anomaly. There has long been speculation that WandaVision could lead directly into the events of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Naturally, audiences have primarily considered Doctor Strange and Scarlet Witch as the connective threads, but what if Mordo and Agatha become embroiled in a conflict of their own? Through their experiences, both have developed uniquely warped perspectives on magic and sorcery more broadly. But as they each pursue their respective agendas, Mordo and Agatha may face an ultimatum in the form of each other. WandaVision has promised at least one more shocking cameo; could Chiwetel Ejiofor arrive to threaten the witches of Westview?
