Avengers: Everything To Expect From The Square Enix Marvel Game In 2021

Marvel's Avengers was released in 2020 by Square Enix and has had a bit of a fumbling start. While players praised the main campaign, there was some criticism about the mechanics, character progression, microtransactions, customization, and gameplay variation which resulted in a drop in the number of people interacting with the product.

There are plenty of other Marvel and comic book games for fans to turn to and indeed it seemed like they have. However, 2021 is a fresh start for Square Enix, who are expected to make some updates to Avengers which looks to completely change up the content players have become familiar with.

10 XP Changes

Progression and how a character can level up wasn't actually something that players had an issue with. For the most part, the mechanics of this aspect of the game seemed fair and largely attainable. For the progression system to support other new aspects of the game though, Square Enix is making a change.

March 18th will see the launch of a number of changes, including what's being called an 'XP rework.' The developers suggest that there is not a curve like in most other RPGs and that the leveling up system may be too quick. Players will therefore have to work harder for their XP from level 25 onwards.

9 Free To Play

While nothing has been officially confirmed, Square Enix is certainly looking to make big changes. There have been many rumors and signs that the game could be going free to play. Granted, unlike other DLC from recent superhero titles, all updates to Marvel's Avengers have been included in the initial price of the game.

There are plenty of microtransactions that impact poses, nameplates, character customization, and other such elements that do require real money though. These elements could be eliminated by the end of the year to make the game more accessible to a wider range of players.

8 Hawkeye DLC

Speaking of DLC, March 18th will also see the launch of the latest Hawkeye DLC, which could have massive repercussions for the future narrative of the game. This brand new story is titled Future Imperfect and will be following Clint Barton as the protagonist.

This is a direct follow-up to the previous Kate Bishop story Taking AIM, which saw Clint's protĂ©gĂ© search for him after he was imprisoned by AIM. It will see players travel to the far future, where the Kree have launched a massive attack on the Earth, leading to the end of the world.

7 Return To The Campaign

Players were incredibly frustrated to learn that they could not originally replay the much-loved campaign of the game, with their leveled-up heroes and new characters. This was an oversight of the game's development, but one Square Enix has listened to and was keen to fix.

The developers have announced that players will soon be able to completely replay the Reassembled story campaign, along with using their upgraded and experienced range of heroes in these familiar battles. It's yet another update that looks to continue to expand the options players have.

6 Maestro And Further Villains

Whether they are in some ways sympathetic or pure evil, fans have absolutely come to love the villains of Marvel. The original campaign allowed players to battle again Taskmaster, Abomination, The Scientist Supreme, M.O.D.O.K., and the Kree, alongside several A.I.M. thugs and androids.

The first Kate Bishop DLC and subsequent gameplay only expanded this to the Watchdogs and the Super-Adaptoid. Future Imperfect has been confirmed to include a Maestro boss battle, but with players looking for further variation, there may be several other thugs and boss battles being added to the game in future updates.

5 Further DLC

Avengers is set to continue to expand its DLC throughout the year, which will indeed include new heroes and villains. Currently, it very much has its sights set on concluding this Hawkeye release, although, with the introduction of the Kree, signs could point to the addition of Captain Marvel next.

Alternatively, the game has been building to characters like Nick Fury, Ant-Man, or even Maria Hill getting their own narratives. There were rumors that the first DLC to be released was to be based around Black Panther and Wakanda, however, Chadwick Boseman's tragic passing led to plans significantly changing.

4 Next-Gen Games

Another major move for Square Enix is that the Avengers game will be available on next-gen consoles. A lot of hard work has gone into ensuring that they operate with these updated systems, from the complex controllers to taking advantage of the loading speeds.

Square Enix is going one step further though. They are allowing players to get a free upgrade to next-gen consoles and ensuring that it's easy to continue from wherever the player left off in terms of their progression within the game. This is another release taking place on March 18th.

3 Customizable H.A.R.M. Room

Players will be aware of the H.A.R.M. Room which can be found on the Helicarrier in the game. It's an area that provides a space for players to get comfortable using certain characters, helps to upgrade them, and acts in many ways as a tutorial against programmed enemies.

It's a unique addition but one that didn't feel overly personalized. The next update will completely change how this X-Men-inspired 'Danger Room' like space will operate. Square Enix has confirmed that players will now be able to customize the H.A.R.M. Room setting up different challenges and enemies, alongside altering the environmental dangers.

2 Spider-Man

When the game was first being marketed to fans, there was confirmation that Spider-Man would be a PlayStation exclusive. Since then, there has been very little mention of Peter Parker ever suiting up for Avengers.

While it's likely difficult to bring his unique mechanics into the game, the success of the Spider-Man title may have meant that Sony wanted to keep the character away from the Square Enix project. As of right now though, Spider-Man should still be joining the other Avengers at some stage, perhaps in 2021.

1 Drive To Bring Back Fans

Marvel's Avengers may have had a tough year in 2020; 2021 is an era of change for the game as it continues to evolve. All of these changes are part of a larger drive to bring players back and hopefully attract brand new fans to the project.

Alongside these significant moves, the developers are committed to updating the game, fixing any bugs, and will provide constant community challenges and other such events. There's a number of other shifts they could make including couch co-op play, complete character customization, and expansion into playable villains, which may happen in 2021 and bring in renewed interest as it tries to make its case for being a quality comic book video game.
