Grey's Anatomy: The Main Characters, Ranked By Work Ethic

The characters of Grey's Anatomy all have a decent work ethic. While the show tends to focus intently on the doctors' intimate relationships and friendships, their hard work at the hospital plays a large role in their character development.

The surgeons of Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital have all at some point sacrificed their personal life and sometimes their own safety to make sure they fulfill their oaths. While all the surgeons have had a memorable save, most fans will agree that some of the surgeons have a tendency to go above and beyond for their patients.

10 Tom Koracick

Tom is one of the attending neurosurgeons at Grey-Sloan. He has experience training Amelia Shepherd while they were both at Johns Hopkins Hospital and he later operated on her brain tumor.

Tom's work ethic is mostly based on his ego. He consistently touts that he is unmatched, especially after pulling off Catherine Avery's surgery. Unfortunately, this doesn't help him with making friends or deeper relationships. To summarize, Tom can commit to his job just enough and is good at it but that's all.

9 Teddy Altman

Viewers know Teddy Altman is experienced in the military and as a trauma doctor. She becomes the Co-Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital. However, Teddy didn't get her role in the cardiothoracic surgery department without hard work.

Unfortunately, Teddy can allow her personal life to affect her professional one, which means she is not always focused. Sometimes, her personal feuds have even prevented her from working with her colleagues. For that, many would say she has a poor work ethic.

8 Jo Wilson

Jo enters the show like most interns, ready to go and with a backstory that will prove why she carries herself with a wall up. Grey's has a tendency to focus on Jo's relationships as well because of the lead-up to her marrying Alex Karev.

Although Jo's work ethic suffered a little because she has sometimes allowed the workplace drama to affect her career, she has gotten better as the seasons progressed. After becoming Chief Resident and an attending, fans will admit that Jo's work ethic and abilities continue to improve with time.

7 Maggie Pierce

The other Co-Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery is Maggie Pierce. She finished high school and medical school early so viewers know she has a good work ethic.

Maggie is exceptionally intelligent and likes a puzzle. From her first appearances in season 10, she worked on the children of the McNeil family who all have cardiomyopathy and even revisits them to help with genetic mapping, she goes above and beyond to help. She gets the job done and, as she once said, she "brings the thunder."

6 Owen Hunt

The Head of Trauma and Chief of Surgery, Owen Hunt is a classic case of "right man for the job." With a lot of military and medical experience, Owen knows how to keep things professional and keep his personal life out of the work.

He was always a good leader and was challenged to prove it when he had to deal with the hospital lawsuit. He also did a great job in helping to save numerous jobs when the hospital was shutting down.

5 April Kepner

April's dedication to her work is evident from the moment she steps foot in what was Seattle Grace. Not only did she become Chief Resident after the attendings noticed her exceptional OR and organizational skills but she also proved to have an excellent bedside manner that provided many patients with comfort.

After she goes to Jordan and volunteers as a trauma doctor for soldiers on the front lines, the viewers see her develop new skills and confidence. Even now she has left Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital, April continues to volunteer for charity clinics and provide healthcare to those who may be homeless.

4 Andrew DeLuca

Sometimes touted as the "star resident" of the hospital, Andrew DeLuca is consistent in his passion for medicine. Initially, DeLuca was an EMT after high school. However, DeLuca decided not long after that he wanted to go to medical school to become a doctor.

Since then, fans will agree that DeLuca has proven to be a committed and caring surgeon. While many wouldn't consider him as skilled as Cristina or Derek, fans will admit that he is better at connecting with his patients and knowing when something is amiss. If any of the patients were in distress, he would go out of the way to ease their fears. He is, by far, one of the most underrated surgeons.

3 Meredith Grey

Meredith has a passion for innovation in medicine. Meredith started with a tumor trial with Derek Shepherd and continued on an upward path, joining in on the Alzheimer's trial she was personally invested in and then starting her own

Ultimately, Meredith solidified her role and dedication to her work when she became the Chief of General Surgery and a Catherine Fox Award winner.

2 Cristina Yang

Cristina would not be in her role of researcher, Chief Medical Officer, and Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Klausman Institute without a work ethic that well surpassed everyone's expectations.

From the moment she arrived, she ran to pages from attendings and residents. Although Cristina's education suffered as a result of her mentors constantly leaving, Cristina was not one to give up. She would brush up on her medical knowledge to make sure she didn't fall behind and jump at any chance to be on a surgery. While her excitement could lead to some mistakes being made, her impetus to learn proved what a hard-worker she was.

1 Miranda Bailey

Miranda knew the risks of being a doctor and having a family but was passionate about both. She worked hard for herself and her son and later met the love of her life in the medical field.

From the beginning, Miranda constantly has the highest work ethic, dedicating herself to shaping the minds of interns. She also managed to work her way through the ranks - becoming Chief Resident, the Head of General surgery, and, finally, the Chief of Surgery.
