Warning! Spoiler for Strange Academy #5 below!
Being in possession of a magical, living cloak is an excellent resource for powerful sorcerers like Doctor Strange, but there can be a dark side to enchanted artifacts. In new previews for Strange Academy #5 by Marvel Comics, student Calvin Morse is seen daydreaming about his life as a foster child, where his own magical cape turns into a deadly weapon.
Doctor Strange's Cloak of Levitation has long been one of his most important magical items alongside the Eye of Agamotto, the Book of Vishanti, and the Wand of Watoomb. Strange first debuted the artifact in Strange Tales #114, where it was blue before it changed into the more familiar red cloak in the series #127th issue. Given to him by the Ancient One, the Cloak of Levitation grants him the ability to float, can act as a protective barrier, and can be activated without being worn. It's a very cool item that's come in handy for Marvel's Sorcerer Supreme more times than he can count.
Sadly, enchanted artifacts don't always place nice. In new previews for Strange Academy #5 by Skottie Young, Humberto Ramos, and Edgar Delgado, Calvin Morse daydreams in class about his time as a foster child. In the dream, Calvin is asked by his foster parents where he got his jacket. Calvin responds by telling them it was already in his room - but that doesn't stop his guardians from asking if he stole their credit card. After he refuses to take it off, his foster dad tries to remove it from him - it turns out that was a very bad idea.
The enchanted jacket, much like Doctor Strange's living cloak, protects its wearer and ties itself around his foster father. However, Calvin's jacket takes things a step further by seemingly choking him to death, while it's about to get his foster mom, when he's awoken by his teacher, the Scarlet Witch. Calvin says his coat did terrible things in his dream.
It's definitely a good thing Strange Academy got to Calvin before he could use his coat for more nefarious reasons. The fact that his enchanted coat strangled his foster parent (it's still somewhat unclear if this actually happened) shows that not all living cloaks are the same. Clearly, he has an edge that makes it a seriously dangerous weapon. In the hands of a young student who's still learning the first few things about magic, that's a pretty bad combination. Calvin needs lessons from Doctor Strange about how to deal with the living coat immediately! Strange Academy #5 is in stores next week.
