Phasmophobia’s latest update improves the AI of its ghosts, making for even scarier hunts. The popular indie game has been on the top of Steam’s charts since its early access release in September 2020, and it won a Game Award for Best Debut Indie Game. Developed by Kinetic Games, the game was designed from the ground up for virtual reality headsets and Android.
Kinetic Games’ first title is already considered by many as one of the best horror games to release in some time. The game focuses on a team of professional ghost hunters using specialized equipment to seek specters, who in turn can track down players based on the sound of their voice. It features multiple maps to explore with up to three others in co-op gameplay. In addition, each game is different, as ghosts and side objectives are procedurally generated. The challenge of each game is to identify the creature haunting the players before it’s too late.
In a post on the developer's Steam page, Kinetic Games details its new update, which improves the ghost’s AI in a multitude of ways. Ghosts can now follow players around corners if they lose sight, open doors and lockers during or outside of hunts, and search for a player based on their last known location. Furthermore, a ghost can now target any player that gets too close while it's chasing another player. A specific update for the banshee will allow it to track one player’s voice throughout the hunt. The update also adds quality of life improvements, gameplay changes to the temperature and Parabolic Microphone mechanics, and lots of bug fixes.
The changes to the game look to eliminate features that players once used to cheese the game while also improving ghost variability. This is a smart move; more varied ghosts leads to less predictability, which in turn makes for scarier encounters. What may disappoint players is that the update does not add any new ghosts to the game. Past updates have added new maps and behavioral changes to ghosts, but it has been some time since a new type of ghost was added.
Phasmophobia has already rolled out one new apparition in the form of a mystery ghost for players to encounter. It would be clever for the developer to keep people guessing about what ghosts they are hunting even as they struggle to stay alive. Even more varied ghost types would be welcome, but regardless, the popularity of the game is sure to keep the developer working to produce more content.
Phasmophobia is available now on PC and Android.
