After more than 30 seasons, it’s no surprise that The Simpsons has such a vibrant and colorful supporting cast, even if most of those were first featured well over 20 years ago. Many of those characters deserve their own spin-off shows, whether it’s a murderous clown, a mayor open to bribes, or an evil billionaire, but there are still so many other surreal characters that a full-length series could explore.
It’s a testament to how rich the world of Springfield is that there are this many characters worthy of a spin-off. From mysterious British madmen to fictional television personalities, it’s a mystery why there isn’t a Simpsons Cinematic Universe.
10 Rainier Wolfcastle
As a clear parody of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Rainier Wolfcastle is this world’s Austrian movie star, and he has starred in fictional blockbuster hits such as Undercover Nerd, Jaws of Life, and of course the McBain series. In an almost Entourage-type format, a whole series revolving around Wolfcastle writes itself, as it could follow the actor as he shoots the movies, and it’d document the diva attitude that’s been hinted at in past episodes.
9 Ol’ Gil
The Simpsons has always been one of the greatest series about the working class, but a spin-off series based on Ol’ Gill Gunderson, a down-on-his-luck salesman, might be too depressing and true to life to be fun and entertaining. The character struggles to make a living for his family, not to mention he has many health issues, including bronchitis. The guy is so unlucky that even Homer thinks he’s a loser.
However, as Gil has had so many different jobs, a quality comedy could be spun out of this, especially as he even found success in law when he worked with Marge on her anti-sugar campaign. And from being a mall Santa to running the Kwik-E-Mart, to joining a jazz band, Gil is actually somewhat of a mystery man and one of many talents.
8 Cletus
There are so many recurring characters that have only a few lines of dialogue in the show’s 30 year history, but they still leave their mark, and Cletus is one of those characters. The only times Cletus appears are usually only for one-liners that throw insults at hillbillies.
A spin-off show starring Cletus could be like My Name Is Earl, as the character’s trailer park life has a swarm of crazy characters in itself. Plus, Cletus already has a theme tune for his potential spin-off, “Cletus The Slack Jawed Yokel,” which featured in the episode “22 Short Films About Springfield.”
7 Groundskeeper Willie
Though he doesn’t exactly do much for Scottish stereotypes, Groundskeeper Willie is one of the most animated characters of the show. And that’s not to say his design is detailed, but he is figuratively animated with his deep-rooted anger issues, thick Scottish accent, and his intense patriotism. A Willie spin-off could take the world of The Simpsons overseas, and give fans an origin story in Scotland, showing what made the groundskeeper so angry in the first place.
6 Fat Tony
Though he’s one the sketchiest characters in the show, it’s always a delight when Fat Tony shows up. Surprisingly, Fat Tony is actually based on a real-life person. Anthony Salerno was the head of the Genovese crime family in the 1980s, and he was convicted in 1986 for racketeering, so there’s even a whole decades long history that a Fat Tony spin-off could satirize.
Sure, Salerno has been depicted many times in pop culture in the past, including in Kill The Irishman and most recently in Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman, but The Simpsons’ depiction in a whole series would be so exciting.
5 Herbert Powell
With Homer getting dumber and unfortunately more annoying with each season, having Herbert Powell take the reigns in his own series would take the series in a very different direction. Being Homer’s brother, Herbert is essentially who Homer would be if he had his life together and didn’t make countless mistakes. Well, Herbert did have his life together until Homer ruined it, and a spin-off could tell the rags-to-riches story and back again in a hilarious way. Not to mention that the voice is famously voiced by Danny DeVito, so it’s got star power behind it already.
4 Bart Simpson
Bart Simpson is every kid’s favorite character due to how mischievous the 10-year-old is, and whether it’s sawing the head off a statue or getting his own pet dog addicted to cigarettes, nobody can outdo Bart’s troublesome behavior. But with every misstep, every detention, and every prank call to Moe’s Tavern, there’s always a lesson learned.
By the end of the episode, Bart always seems to have learned his lesson, that is until he does the very same thing in the following episode. An unfiltered Bart Simpson series would be the news most fans want, as many have grown tired with the way that writers have treated many of the other characters in recent years.
3 Kent Brockman
Almost like a skewed version of Anchorman, a Kent Brockman spin-off could be like a fly-on-the-wall of what goes on behind the scenes of Channel 6. The news reporter is hilariously stoic and says whatever he wants when live on air. And surprisingly enough, for who is a relatively minor character, Brockman has quite a deep backstory. He’s a failed musician and was at one point planning on becoming a math teacher, so even a prequel could prove to be just as fascinating.
2 Itchy & Scratchy
Maybe it could be overkill, but 20-minute length episodes of Itchy & Scratchy would be joyfully violent. The fictional show within a show was the most exciting part of the episodes they appeared in, and the episode “Itchy & Scratchy Land” is one of the best episodes of season six, so a modern-day Tom & Jerry that takes the violence to extremes would fit perfectly with the current trend of adult animated shows. There could even be a select few episodes featuring Poochie, the “cool” character that was created to boost ratings in “Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie.”
1 Kang & Kodos
Kang and Kodos generally appear to host the Treehouse of Horror episodes, and though some of those episodes might have aged poorly, the two alien beings and the way they deliver their lines are timeless.
Unfortunately, the aliens have never had the opportunity to shine outside of the Halloween specials, as any time they’re in a normal episode it’s simply a cameo, but a spin-off could easily fix that. A spin-off following Kang and Kodos traveling through space and commentating on other walks of life, just like they do with the civilians of Springfield, would be legendary.
