There's no denying Rue and Jules maintain a very special bond in HBO's Euphoria. Fans of their burgeoning queer romance understand the love shared between them is complicated -- just as complicated as their personal lives and the lives of those around them.
Rue, played by Zendaya, and Jules, played by Hunter Schafer, find solace and acceptance in each other. While their struggles and traumas may very likely destroy their chances of creating a stable long-term relationship together in future seasons, their love for each other remains very strong. Fortunately, there are plenty of memes attesting to just how extraordinary these two Euphoria characters are, as well as memes highlighting the actors who play them.
10 Euphoria Meets Adventure Time
Unfortunately, LGBTQ+ romances are still few and far between on TV, which is part of the reason Rue and Jules's romance is such a big deal. Fans of another popular show, Adventure Time, watched on for seasons as Princess Bubblegum and Marceline's "special bond" finally culminated with a kiss at the very end of season 10.
Of course, two female-identifying characters sharing physical intimacy on a children's TV show stirred up controversy. Haters gonna hate, though.
9 Where Is The Music Coming From?
Rue's struggles with drug addiction and mental health issues are central to her narrative in Euphoria. Zendaya rightfully earned an Emmy award for honestly showcasing her character's anxiety, depression, and enduring traumas -- especially related to the loss of her father.
The style and speed of Euphoria also mimick's Rue inner monologues and workings. It's fast-paced, chaotic, and exactly like having 17 internet browser tabs going at once.
8 We're All Crying
Plans to film season two of Euphoria were halted last spring due to Covid-19, but show creator Sam Leviston worked with Hunter Schafer and Zendaya later in 2020 to film their own one-hour specials. They were both released recently on HBO Max, and they're both intimate looks into the lives of Rue and Jules after the season one finale.
Jules's special, "F**k Anyone Who's Not a Sea Blob," revolves around Jules attending her very first therapy session. Schafer, who co-wrote the episode, opens up about some seriously heady stuff, from conceptions of womanhood, her own evolving idea of femininity, and even potentially going off her hormone replacement therapy.
7 Star-Crossed Lovers
Rue and Jules aren't the only R & J to grace the screen -- or the stage. It's obvious their names and their initials pay tribute to the ill-fated teenaged lovers Romeo and Juliet from William Shakespeare's iconic play.
On Halloween, Jules even dresses up like Claire Danes' Juliet from Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet. Fingers crossed Rue and Jules won't end on a tragic note like their namesakes.
6 Can You Please Get Out Of The Pool?
The now old meme featuring Ms. Juicy from Little Women: Atlanta takes on a new meaning when Rue and Jules are added into it. This meme summarizes what transpires between Rue and Jules during the Halloween party at the end of season one.
A sober Rue, who worries she may treat her relationship with Jules like an addiction, watches as a very intoxicated Jules jumps into a swimming pool. As Rue tries to lure her love out of the pool, Jules decides to quote her favorite lines from Romeo and Juliet.
5 It's Just Too Much To Handle
Who knows what the future holds for Rue and Jules, but the glimpses of sweetness and love granted to audiences are already, simply put, way too much to handle. In the world created in Euphoria, finding those kinds of delightful, tender moments is rare.
The at times difficult, at times breath-taking dynamic evolving between Rue and Jules isn't just for queer-identifying people. Anyone who has experienced true romance knows how much confusion, elation, and sometimes pain comes along for the ride.
4 No Room For Hetereonormativity In Here
Jules really doesn't have the best lines in the series. They only get better with each passing episode, too.
Choosing Schafer, a trans woman, to play a trans woman on screen, makes Jules's progression all the more real for viewers. Nothing attests to this like another brilliant line Jules conveys in her special: "at least for me, being trans is spiritual."
3 Look At What I've Accomplished
Just like Ben from Parks & Recreation, Rue undergoes a depression-induced revelation after binging hours of reality TV. Relying on her best friend Lexi for help, Rue puts on her detective uniform and digs into what's really happening between Nate and Jules.
While it sounds like a total conspiracy theory, Rue's hypothesis is totally true. Nate, a toxic and abusive football player with sexual insecurities, definitely blackmailed and manipulated Jules -- who has yet to feel comfortable enough to share this terrible situation with anyone else, even Rue.
2 I Kinda Disagree
The first night Rue and Jules spend together, a fresh-out-of-rehab Rue offers her new love interest drugs. "I feel like this isn't a good idea," Jules says, but Rue quickly comes back with one of the show's most iconic lines: "I kind disagree."
This is the start of a tumultuous friendship that evolves into a tumultuous romance. It's also perfect fodder for memes.
1 Hunter And Zendaya Forever
When they aren't playing Rue and Jules, Zendaya and Hunter Schafer are just as stunning and amazing offscreen. The relationship their characters develop in Euphoria is unparalleled on TV, a testament to their acting abilities.
As they prepare to begin filming season two of Euphoria later this spring, there's no doubt fans will be scouring social media in search of any on-set photos, videos, or exclusives. In the meantime, fan theories abound about what will happen next in the lives of these main characters.
